As for the 47%: They don't. Pay income taxes that is. Which is why the case for tax reform has always been so hard to make. And why this week's effort by the MSM to drag Romney down won't work any more than last week's try by Obama's fans in the big media.
Interesting to see the reaction from left and right. HotAir's Allahpundit summarizes and correctly guesses that the left MSM will be declaring Romney dead tomorrow.
The right will be applauding the candor and encouraging more of the same. Already begun in fact.
The spin from the Manhattan-Beltway Obama chorus has been crescendoing for ten days, with "don't bother us with the the facts" statements such as the Washington Post's Philip Rucker declaring that Romney's biggest supporters knew his "momentum had stalled." (No evidence for this "stalling" is offered up by Rucker, and of course it is Obama's polling that has stalled and fallen as his convention bounce faded over ten days. Note the blue arrow pointing down at RCP's "national average" of polls.)

He was talking about income tax, and you know it!
Why do you want Obama to win re-election so bad? All you do is campaign for Obama.
I have a great idea. Try not to guess what i have to say about anything outside of the topic at hand
I have no intention of doing any such thing. We just do not see this the same way. There is nothing wrong with that and I never make it personal... ever.
LLS
I don't believe that. I think he said that he has little chance of competing for their votes, not that he doesn't want them.
That's been the pattern all along and you don't want me to think one of the candidate is absurdly ignorant of what's going on. Or do you?
So, tell us what is it that attracts you to Obamugabe? The crease of his pants perhaps?
BTW, next time you come to a debate please come prepared with something other than a kazoo.
Gotta' be an interesting outlook on life ~ but not one I share, but then again, he's not a Conservative, never will be a Conservative, doesn't know any Conservatives, and can't imagine what they would add to a campaign ~ he thinks there's this middle of 5% to 10% who are the only ones he has to campaign for and they'll make the selection.
So, do we simply have a different sort of marxist than the marxist the Democrats offer?
I can assure you that I know people are more than the bucks in their wallets ~ can you say the same?
There is no evidence whatsoever in your contention that there are people who pay no taxes whatsoever ~ that wasn’t true even in Communist Albania ~ everybody’s got a tax and they collect it one way or the other ~ it’s a fact of life on planet Earth.
There are people who pay no income taxes, that is what this is about, not payroll SSI, Medicare, etc.
I get the other side ~ not you. My contention is that no one gets out of life on this planet without paying any taxes.
So, you ready to make up your mind?
You might be right, however these were his own words:
“My job is is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”
That means he doesn’t see the point in canvassing for their vote, and if he’s not interested in their vote why would they expect him to do anything for them once in power?
OK, if we take “those people” to mean Obamabots, spongers, freeloaders, drug-addled parasites and the like then fair enough.
But as other people have pointed out, the 47% of people who don’t pay tax include, amongst other things:
1. Disabled people whose career options are limited and will work long hours for little money in dead end jobs to support themselves and their families
2. The retired population who may be full time carers, full time grandparents, church volunteers, charity workers
3. Mothers who regard being a mom as a full time occupation (know any war widows, or moms with severely disabled children? I do)
4. Some enormously wealthy “tax exiles” living near down the road in London (yep, I’m in England) who run multimillion dollar businesses based on the East Coast of the USA and whose wages are paid in the form of bonds, shares and other fiddles, through proxies and places like the Caymans, to ensure the government doesn’t get a grubby little cent
And the list of people who “pay no taxes” who aren’t Obama fans (much less “the undeserving poor”!) gets very long indeed.
It’s a very diverse 47%.
When can we, as a nation, get away from the idea that the purpose of the Presidency in particular, and the government in general, is to DO THINGS FOR ME?
It's a damn cancer on this nation, and it's eating us.
Really.
When you earn nothing - you pay nothing.
There are people on welfare, disability and god knows what else who earn nothing and get a government check. Those who use part of that government check to pay sales tax are not themselves paying the sales tax - it wasn’t their money to begin with and they didn’t put any work effort to acquire the money.
According to d'Sousa, the original contention wasn't even that 47% didn't pay federal personal income tax, it's a bit more technical than that in fact, but it's being misused ~ and quite knowledgeably by Democrat agents.
So, let's say somebody's not on welfare ~ and they are down to their last $100 earned at a job. They've lost their job. The baby needs milk. They need some nutrition themselves so they buy day old bread, date expired lunchmeat, and some canned beans.
Their last $10 goes for a blue tarp so they can live in the woods.
They don't pay any federal income taxes at that point ~ according to the Romney ad hoc codicil they immediately become a hard core Democrat voter and can simply be ignored in this campaign.
I don't agree!
Might I suggest that some of you guys are suffering from a sort of psychological break that should be looked into!
I don’t believe that any of Romney’s comments are going to motivate the Obamugabe supporters to get out of bed and go to the voting polls on November 6th. This is all “white noise”.
“We are the 47%” sounds like a loser to me.
MR said that? Try Karl Rove -- that's pure Rove, to go on and on about the 8% independents, the 330,000 housewives in 10 battleground States who are going to decide the election .... whenever they get around to looking at the TV.
And what will they see there? Georgie Clintonopoulos and Terry Moron taking turns with Brian Williams and Bob Schieffer, sticking knitting needles in their Mittens voodoo dolls.
"Hatey Katie" Couric is on in the afternoons now on ABC ... is that a coincidence, or did she get staked out there by the Lords of the Continuum to work over those 330,000 housewives watching daytime TV?
He wishes.
Romney's floor is made up mostly of pissed-off conservatives who hate his guts. Good luck with that, Bishop.
