There are lots of good honest moral upstanding god-fearing Americans who, out of the goodness of their hearts and without any compulsion from the federal govermnent, help out with raising grandchildren, volunteer in hospitals, work for charities, do good works in their communities through the church, and they are doing all that despite being on such low incomes themselves that they pay next to no tax at all.

Don’t you think they might be quite offended at what Mitt’s said?

It’s not what he said about tax evaders voting Obama that’s the problem. What is the problem is that he wrote their votes off. Actually, that’s doing a disservice to him. He pretty much said he doesn’t even want their votes. He said he has no intention of doing anything for the likes of them even if he gets elected by them.

Crazy. Just crazy.

It’s one heck of a political gaffe. Where were his campaign advisors? Jeez. It’s so bad we can expect Family Guy to be sending it up in weeks.

Mitt Romney, guest of honour at a Carter Pewterschmidt fundraiser full of super-rich blue blooded “screw the poor” types, chortling behind closed doors that hard workers on low incomes, the retired, veterans, the disabled, ALL of those tax dodgers* might as well be thrown in with the drug addicts, illegal immigrants, trailer trash, feckless freeloaders etc etc they expect to vote Obama.

* With an obvious aside to point out that present billionaire tax evaders collecting big checks from Washington while squirrelling all their wealth in Belize, Geneva, Monaco, China etc etc are excluded, obviously

They’re actually given the incentive to stay home and do nothing. If they’re on the gov’t teat, they get used to it - and the “benefits” drop if they actually start working for a living. And by gosh, why should they have to tighten their belts and settle for ‘generic’ junk food?

RE :”Sorry. I want Obama retired and out of our lives but Mittens screwed up royally.
we too screw up using the 47% number. we lump in someone who worked 45 years and is living on SS with welfare queens. We are lumping in the genuinely disabled with scam artists. we are lumping in people who worked for decades and lost their job and would like nothing better than to get back into the workforce with people who have never intended to perform an honest days labor.

Romney said this at what he thought was a private fund-raiser to a receptive audiences, those with big $$$ who pay lots of income taxes, I assume they do or he wouldnt have said it to them.
Now that it is out he has little choice but to defend/explain it. If he was to now say he was wrong then he is toast.

The points you bring up have validity. For example, many seniors on SS who pay no federal income taxes are a key Republican voting block. Recall a few weeks ago Ryan in FLA saying that he loves his mom so he will defend every dime of her medicare no matter what it costs. Does his Mom pay federal income taxes? Is she voting for Obama? Is she the 53% or the 47% ?
You can see how this wasn't too thought out and he didnt want it public but now they must defend it.

you are so full of it ~ America has this planet’s most productive workforce in history ~ too many goobers out there imagine that the unemployed want to be unemployed. you spend your time pulling the plugs on all the computers in this country and everybody will be employed digging neighborhood ditches to replace the world’s finest buried sewer systems.

Ever since the 47% thing first came up I've been ridiculing it. Someone else mentioned that d'Sousa had a detailed article on the question.

The mittbots told us this guy was smart, and here we are barely a month away from the election and he's peddling the old "10% in the middle count' nonsense, and now this 47% don't pay taxes stuff, and that's what he said.

He actually has such a light grasp of what the topic is about ~ what it is that 47% are doing or not doing he didn't even restrict it to a claim about federal personal income tax. you listen to those tapes he's saying 'no taxes' several times!

So mittbots, where's his smarts?

NOTE: the rich folks he was peddling this stuff to must be coupon clippers themselves living on Grandpa's fortune because they know better than to believe anybody can escape taxes.

Which is why i also stated we have used that 47% number over and over and we’re wrong. If that number had any validity we could not win any elections.

The point is that the 47 % are not paying their “Fair Share” of PERSONAL Federal Income Tax.

The Federal Welfare Entitlement Plantation is now totally dependent on selling America down the river by selling IOU Federal Bonds to China and other bond buyers.

40 cents on every Federal Dollar spent go to pay for Entitlements.

40 cents on every Federal Dollar spent must be borrowed from those who buy Federal Bonds.

The 47 % who pay NO Personal Federal Income Tax will vote their wallets and keep Commie Obama in power.

Now is the time for Romney to double down, NEVER apologize, and attack Commie Obama.

RE :”Which is why i also stated we have used that 47% number over and over and we’re wrong. If that number had any validity we could not win any elections

The 47% number is routinely used to counter Dems claims that many of the real rich pay the lower 20% capital gains rate less than those making much less than them. When used in that way it is useful.

In the context of Romney's POTUS election its not something he should have said in such a gathering, in fact it was pretty dumb.
There may be near 47% who pay no FITs and there may be near 47% who will never vote for a R (many just will not vote) but they are not the same 47%. Pretty stupid.
A real candidate could convince some of those 47% that he can make their lives better without handouts. At least dont convince them to come out and vote against you.

No matter what, 47% pay no taxes period. No one said anything about welfare queens, he stated a fact. I know the media doesn’t want people to hear something like this in the middle of an Obama class warfare campaign, but it isn’t the wealthy who aren’t paying.

Open your mind... he was talking about the 47% of the electorate that ALWAYS votes for the rat. Look at the percentage of Americans that voted for carter and then clinton and then kerry... Years ago it was 42% and it is at 47% today... and that is a fact. The truth is the truth and it cannot be redefined as anything but the truth.

the real problem in this statement, IMO, is to say that he [mittens] is totally unconcerned with trying to *win* the vote of the welfare queens, that hes only interested in the small portion of mushy middle...

so i guess its all in a sense of how it came across to each individual as to whether or not he was labeling someone a 47 or a 53...certainly ryans mother could take his statement and assume that he just said he wasnt concerned about her vote, as she is a 'taker' from the system, and alienating her...

hes foolish if he thinks he doesnt need to sway some of the 47 to his side...

The 47% is NOT the 47% who pay no taxes. Theres overlap but those two slices of pie are not identical.

He also stated those 47% will never vote for him. Like all the seniors that are part of that 47% who do vote republican.
Don’t try and parse what he said. Don’t even try and play the games that dems do.

Of all the people who posted on here that i have responded to you’re the first worthy of no reply.
I’m not sure if you could have made less sense if you were trying to.
By the way, people WHO MUST USE CAPS TO MAKE THEIR POINT generally have no point at all.

RE :”hes foolish if he thinks he doesnt need to sway some of the 47 to his side...”

I made a similar point here already, but as I said he only meant this statement for his super-rich buddies (to get them to give campaign $$$) and now it was leaked so he is trapped into explaining it without repudiating it.

Romney as you all know is just a very slippery character but unlike Bill Clinton he doesnt have the skills to get away with it.
Old Grover Norquist said we just need someone (Romney) who can sign bills and and no other skills or qualities matter even this endless stupidity, he is assuming a filibuster proof R congress. Grove is bit short sighted.

I mean reality is reality, regardless of the ABBOs fears.

I get the point of your “no point at all,” which is the point of making a point.

Read his words... he mentions those that pay no taxes and those that see themselves as victims and those that have a vested interest in big government etc.. sub groups within the 47%. You are free to think whatever you wish to. I guess you think his stating that the Palis have no interest in peace is a mistake also?

[ Second, it simply is not true that those who do not pay income tax have no reason to turn Obama out of office. ]

Romney made exactly 3 points.

1. Both he and Obama have a high floor of diehards, about 47% each. The battle is to be fought over those in between.
2. The difference between his diehards and Obama’s diehards is that Obama’s diehards like the idea of government dependency and he doesn’t.
3. It’s going to be hard to attract the separate 47% who pay no income taxes on a message of tax cuts.

What he said was about as controversial as saying 2+2=4.
