Posted on 10/03/2012 6:40:23 AM PDT by 1Old Pro
Please post your ideas for Romney to WIN this debate:
My advice, use the Reagan Line the FIRST time Obama blames the previous administration - There you go again Mr. Obama, failing to take responsibility for your mistakes.
Obama will know he cannot blame Bush again during the entire debate or he throw's Romney a softball to use the line again and make it the most memorable takeaway from the debate - that Obama can't take responsibility for the horrible economy he caused.
Stay on the big themes of a society of liberty versus a society of government. Quit nit picking crap like a an ad campaign about China to win the votes of the China phobes and another one over here to win a few voters on some other issue. (not that the issue isn’t valid, just saying...)
Stay big - it’s freedom versus totalitarianism. It’s liberty versus government. Two choices.
If there is one particular issue to focus in on, its energy. Because energy effects ALMOST EVERY OTHER ISSUE so it is in and of itself a general issue as well as a specific issue.
Sidestep the moderators. Answer the questions directly in one sentence then proceed to your points.
Very good idea, old Pro!
If America only knew....
Will America be lost because noone had the guts to expose Obama?

“he (Romney) needs something people can vote for not just the other guy besides Obama. Talk about us really pursuing our own energy, really doing it, oil exploration, oil shale, natural gas, the millions of jobs and how it can power our economy. Talk about simplifying the tax code so people can run businesses not operate businesses trying to hide from the government. Be Reaganesque, really drive home we want to increase the size of the pie, not divvy up the different pieces to voting blocks. Be positive and enthusiastic about the future, how we need to unleash the private sector, that Partnerships and Investments in the private sector lead to Solyndra.(This would blunt all of Obamas thought speak, about his friendly Fascism, government\private sector partnerships). Drive home we need respect in the world again and to show strength, that appeasing and shaking hands and groveling at with dictators and madmen is very Un-American like.”
Neuter all arguments Obama makes against your record as being meaningless in the face of the problems that Obama has created for the Americans people. Also, mention Fast and Furious.
Mitt has yet to define his own Presidency and policies. Thats whats been missing.
Yes, we know he can create job and Obama has lost jobs. But these bumper sticker slogans are not going to cut it. Were beyond that. The American people need a lesson in Capitalism 101. HOW is Mitt going to created jobs? How is Mitt going to do all of the things he says will happen when Obama is gone. You and I may know this but the average American does NOT.
Mitt Romney needs to define his own policies and explain them in detail so that the American people understand them while at the same time defining Obama as a destroyer in chief.
Mark my words, even if Romney does well in the debates, if he fails to define his own policies, whatever bump he gets from the debates will fade quickly. Theres no substance to maintain a bump.
Start the debate by saying
“In preparing for this debate, I’ve spent a great deal of time studying Barack in an attempt to know him better. While there are many things we just don’t know about him, one thing I’ve determined is that when he’s filtering his words, he stutters and stammers. Back when he was a younger radical, he spoke without concern of his hatred for our country and did it without stuttering. Mr. President, tonight speak without hesitation or reservation about the America you know.”
Don’t get backed into discussing George Bush or Hurricane Katrina because of that stupid video that was released yesterday (which gave the Dems an excuse to revive the whole non-issue).
Do your level best to rattle Barry and get him off script. He is in trouble and he knows it. He is arrogant and has a VERY thin skin. He is just a gentle shove or two away from a massive on-camera meltdown that will cinch his defeat.
Romney ahs a big advantage as soon as he stips out on the stage with Obama; he is tall, handsome and robust.
He looks like a president straight out of central casting.
People will compare him to the skinny, jug earred, purple lipped Obama.
thats all he needs to talk about IMHO....that and
“Mr. President...things that have happened in Libya on 911 have yet to be explained clearly to the American public. Could you use this opportunity to give us a cogent explanation of exactly what went down ?”
Against Obama: Have a catchy one-liner to use for each issue. It must be a strong statement that makes the media want to ask you about it later.
For Romney: Have a simple plan for the economy, jobs, foreign policy. Keep saying: Obama did x. It’s serious and terrible. But I can fix it, and stay true to our country while doing it. Here’s how (simple plan).
Keep saying the the nightmare will be over. Prosperity for all and national security are both going to rebound if I am elected.
Don’t try to be a nice guy, folksy or any of that. Be a smart, rich guy businessman who can get the economy going. Your strong suit is being a strong suit.
Moderator: Governor Romney, Given that everybody hates you and knows you are not going to win, How will you address the deficit?
Moderator: President Obama, What is your favorite Jay Z song?
Moderator: We are rolling to commercial so Chris Matthews can hide his boner.
Bring up Zero’s homosexual tendencies.
I would illuminate the potential of oil and shale production by using the “Dakota’s” as a model to lowering unemployment and raising tremendous royalty dividends that lower the tax burden for our citizens. With a national push to truly become energy independent, we will be able to modify our foreign policy to focus only on actions that are in America’s best interest. Currently we are at the mercy of the Islamic world.
Or better yet, take a page out of Newt’s book and humiliate the moderators. I remember when Newt got that standing ovation during the South Carolina GOP debate:
THIS will generate the enthusiasm that Romney needs to win.
Romney needs to gain control of the debate right away. The questions will be skewed in Obama’s favor. Mitt needs to reframe the question, answer it quickly and then go on the offensive with his own related question, prefacing it with something like “A better question would be....” or “Perhaps you should ask Mr. Obama....”. Even if the moderator admonishes Mitt for asking his own questions, the damage will already be done and Obama will be on his heels.
Romney should say his policy is to stimulate economic growth by lowering the tax burden on the private sector, eliminating growth-killing regulations, and getting more American’s back to work and out of the choom wagon.
"when I move into the White House the new attorney general will initiate a thorough and complete investigation in order to clarify to the American people that Barack Obama was indeed eligible and was the legitimate President of these United States. Such an investigation is only fair to not only President Obama and his legacy but also to the American people. I'm sure that the results of this investigation will provide proof that President Obama was indeed legitimately the President of the United States.
However, if by some chance the accusations turn out to be correct, there is a promise that anybody in Congress whether they be republican or democrat will be legally held accountable and justice will be served for any wrong doing and illegal activity. Let that be a warning to the leaders of Congress who have taken the oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America."
Just don’t do a “McCain” and tell everyone how good a guy 0bama is.
Make fun of his big ears....oh never mind.
Unless Romney STOPS being a wimp and STOPS treating obama like a in guy over his head and STOPS being the nice guy - he wont win anything.
He should pretend obama is a conservative and treat him like he treats conservatives.
Mitt needs to look straight into the camera and say “For the past 3 years President Obama has submitted a Budget for this country that NO ONE in his OWN party has voted for, so now he’s asking all of America to vote for 4 MORE years of this?
Seriously, This debate is about domestic issues. Romney needs to let Obama talk about his current plan for the economy and then say. That is the same "plan" you had in 2008. It didn't work and it wont work.
My advice: Let the “pros” manage the process. The Romney team is not going to consult with this board regarding debate strategy.
If the mental masturbation gives you a warm feeling...go for it.
Otherwise...let’s tune in tonight and see what Mitt and the team have planned.
Excellent post! Thanks!
Bad case of laryngitis, Newt to fill in.
Agree with all that you said.
Empty words like “We need to....” or “I will put Americans back to work..” without saying HOW, are meaningless.
We need to hear some specifics.
And Romney needs to use his “man parts” after he grows a pair. He needs to HAMMER Obama on ALL his failures. If there is not time for that, pick 3 big ones-
-Obamacare and the way its TAXES will hit the middle class and GUT Medicare and the current SPIKE in insurance that we are all experiencing NOW due to Obamacare.
-Fast and Furious
-Bengazi and Obama’s FAILURE to deal with terrorism.
I agree, bring up gas prices and why Obama is to blame.
Also, parents want their kids out of the house paying their own college loans off with a real job - this will connect to women.
ha ha ha ha!
This is a small one..but it could resonate..ask Obama why he has avoided holding a press conference, yet has found the time to sit down with local weirdos..i.e. “pimp with a limp”..this should make Lehrer pay attention..
With due respect, I do not think you could be more wrong. Worrying about policy details is a left brained type B bureaucratic liberal mindset from the outset.
Besides - there is NO WAY to do that. Anyone who can "understand" them is already a Romney supporter OR a hard core leftist Obama supporter. Broad themes, liberty versus big government, is all he can do, and all he needs to do.
Obama is limited because he must stick with a strict set of talking points...Bush did it, things are much worse than I thought, blah, blah, blah.
We know Obama cannot freely speak about who he is and what he rally wants to do. He may very well end up sounding like a scripted dummy.
Romney, while not perfect, has a career, character and true American spirit he can express without being covert.
Romney...for God's sake...do not respond to the moderators or B.O. Look directly into the camera and address the American people! Deflect their stupid gotcha questions! Tell us what we need to hear...not what the moderators want to hear.
Over the course of the debate I predict Romney will appear gracious, intelligent, sincere, strong and prepared.
Obama will be revealed as shallow, petulant and boring.
Or better yet, take a page out of Newts book and humiliate the moderators. I remember when Newt got that standing ovation during the South Carolina GOP debate:
Hmmmmm...it's one thing to take a stand against John King of CNN, but tonight, it would be risky against Jim Lehrer, executive editor of PBS's "NewsHour".
Throughout the decades Lehrer has set forth a demeanor that is calm, business like, 'grandfatherly'. I would liken it to the perception Walter Cronkite had "as the most trusted man in America". Lehrer would be difficult to 'attack'.
1) Stay the course...
2) Get Real...
My only advice to Romney is to get the thought of Obama being a nice guy out of his head. Obama is NOT a nice guy. If he could, he would have all of us who support the Constitution locked up, never to be heard from again.
Romney needs to appeal to the emotions of the voters. Sounds silly, but it was one of the keys to why 0bama won in 2008. His loosey goosey hopey changey stirred the emotions of people who don’t pay attention to the details of the political system because they are engrossed in “real housewives of somewhere.”
If Romney gets into detailed technical solutions for the political issues of the day, as Republicans do, then 0bama can say something that sounds good but means nothing and it will resonate with the undecided squishy center.
Appeal to the emotions of the lowest common denominator!
First, some assumptions:
1) This debate will be watched mostly by people already interested in politics, including many independents who are leaning Obama’s direction. Those watching could, however, favorably influence friends who aren’t interested enough to watch.
2) Reporters from the MSM will be looking for anything they can portray as a Romney gaffe, as they did on his foreign trip, and have been doing since.
3) Many of those independents leaning toward Obama have heard little of what most of us on the right consider to be outright scandals perpetrated by this administration, including (but definitely not limited to) Fast & Furious, stimulus funds going heavily toward Obama bundlers, the recent Libyan debacle, and, most important of all, his outright disrespect for our laws.
Given the above assumptions, I believe Romney should respectfully address the Independent voters in the audience and tell them that he was going to spend his time informing them of actions Obama has taken over the past four years that they might not be aware of, and that the reason they might not be aware of them is because the mainstream press (and call them out by name) has not done its job for the past four years. The intent should be to inform swing voters while putting the MSM on the defensive, giving them less time to play offense, which they will surely do otherwise.
In other words, address the Independent voter and attack the press. Start with a simple statement that many of you have very likely never heard of Fast & Furious, or about how the Obama administration invoked executive privilege to prevent a Congressional investigation from determining how high into the administration knowledge of the program went. Add that they sent one person involved in it to Iraq to spend his time out of the reach of U.S. reporters, who, incidentally, show little inclination to attempt to locate him. Then point out that Hispanic voters, unlike most Independent voters who rely upon NBC, ABC, CNN, etc., for their news “coverage” (if you can call it that) were recently treated to extensive coverage of Fast & Furious by not ABC, or CNN, but by Univision. Yes, Hispanic voters, and most Mexicans, are now more informed about Fast & Furious than you are as Independents, because Univision did its job.
Sum up with: “Tonight, I am going to ask you to listen as I describe, at every opportunity, facts, not opinions, but facts, that have been withheld from you by your typical, in-the-tank-for-Obama, news sources. When I am done with this debate, those same sources will likely go stark raving crazy in attempting to disprove everything I assert here tonight, but I intend to stick to direct, provable facts. And I believe that, when you realize how much has been withheld from you by your traditional news sources, you will begin to realize why so many of us think that the future direction of our country, and of our children and our grandchildren, depends upon your discovery of what the present administration has been doing these past four years.”
In other words, tell the American people, especially the swing voters, exactly what they’ve not been told by the MSM, and drag the MSM’s name through the mud at the same time. The objective should be to make them realize that they’ve been intentionally misled, and to know, name by name, exactly who has done that to them. Go after the MSM with a vengeance.
Oh, and call out Jake Tapper, Shirley Atkisson, and Univision as a whole, as exceptions to the rule. They’re the only ones that have gone off the liberal MSM reservation in all this.
Then, as the questions proceed, focus on one group after another, from working women, to single women, to union members, to Hispanics, to blacks, etc., pointing out a law ignored, or a policy enacted, that they have likely heard nothing of, but which directly, and unfavorably, affects them directly. There’s certainly no lack of material.
Yes, even blacks. How many black Americans know that Obama doesn’t support the DC voucher program, a program supported by most black parents in DC, for example? Given that, what chance is there that he will actually try to improve the lot of center-city blacks? For that matter, what has he accomplished in the four years he’s had already? And why aren’t you hearing about his position on the DC voucher program? That’s right. You’re getting your news from the “in-the-tank-for-Obama” media. (After using that phrase once or twice, keep using it, but start making quote signs with his fingers as he says it.)
Alinsky: Ridicule works. And the MSM is fully deserving of outright ridicule today. Use this debate, and only this debate, to heap ridicule where it belongs, on the people who’ve abdicated their responsibility to keep the public informed. (I say “only this debate” because it will work once, but will be viewed as piling on if used in the next debate. Gingrich scored once, but failed when he tried it again.)
By the way, I know it’s ludicrous to expect Romney to read threads like this. It’s not, however, ludicrous to expect his staff to read it. In fact, I would expect it, so I don’t think time is wasted putting forth ideas here. One just might stick.
To “win” the debate he needs to inject the post-debate commentators with truth serum. We all know the media grades these things with even less objectivity than that of an East German judge at the Olympics.
In lieu of that, Romney needs to show passion. Show that he is a fighter and really wants to win the Presidency. Ironically, with the media saying for weeks now that Obama has this election in the bag, that actually affords Romney the opportunity to be aggressive without coming across as a bully, since people expect underdogs to be scrappy.
Yet he needs to avoid looking like he did in some of the Republican debates, where at times it seemed like he wanted to throttle his opponents. Hopefully he can adopt more of a Giuliani style: hit hard but do so in a likeable way.
Specifically, he needs to remind people again and again that just about everything Obama promised 4 years he would do as President he has failed to do even though his own party controlled the House and Senate his first two years, an advantage not many Presidents have enjoyed in recent decades. He then needs to ask why voters should trust Obama’s new promises when he failed to deliver on his old ones.
Just remember you are debating a Con Man, and all those asking the questions are in on the Con.
Bring up obama encouraging companies to break the law requiring them to notify workers 60days before a layoff, just to hide the issue until after the election. It shows how hypocritical Obama is in his “support” of workers.
