I've been thinking about two things regarding the debate: 1) We know Obama will blame Bush for the horrible economy, he has in the past and it works. 2) Romney needs a zinger and one that will work.

My advice, use the Reagan Line the FIRST time Obama blames the previous administration - There you go again Mr. Obama, failing to take responsibility for your mistakes.

Obama will know he cannot blame Bush again during the entire debate or he throw's Romney a softball to use the line again and make it the most memorable takeaway from the debate - that Obama can't take responsibility for the horrible economy he caused.

Stay on the big themes of a society of liberty versus a society of government. Quit nit picking crap like a an ad campaign about China to win the votes of the China phobes and another one over here to win a few voters on some other issue. (not that the issue isn’t valid, just saying...)

Stay big - it’s freedom versus totalitarianism. It’s liberty versus government. Two choices.

If there is one particular issue to focus in on, its energy. Because energy effects ALMOST EVERY OTHER ISSUE so it is in and of itself a general issue as well as a specific issue.

As pburgh01 said:

“he (Romney) needs something people can vote for not just the other guy besides Obama. Talk about us really pursuing our own energy, really doing it, oil exploration, oil shale, natural gas, the millions of jobs and how it can power our economy. Talk about simplifying the tax code so people can run businesses not operate businesses trying to hide from the government. Be Reaganesque, really drive home we want to increase the size of the pie, not divvy up the different pieces to voting blocks. Be positive and enthusiastic about the future, how we need to unleash the private sector, that “Partnerships” and “Investments” in the private sector lead to Solyndra.(This would blunt all of Obama’s thought speak, about his friendly Fascism, government\private sector partnerships). Drive home we need respect in the world again and to show strength, that appeasing and shaking hands and groveling at with dictators and madmen is very Un-American like.”

Neuter all arguments Obama makes against your record as being meaningless in the face of the problems that Obama has created for the Americans people. Also, mention Fast and Furious.

Mitt has yet to define his own Presidency and policies. That’s what’s been missing.

Yes, we know he can create job and Obama has lost jobs. But these bumper sticker slogans are not going to cut it. We’re beyond that. The American people need a lesson in Capitalism 101. HOW is Mitt going to created jobs? How is Mitt going to do all of the things he says will happen when Obama is gone. You and I may know this but the average American does NOT.

Mitt Romney needs to define his own policies and explain them in detail so that the American people understand them while at the same time defining Obama as a destroyer in chief.

Mark my words, even if Romney does well in the debates, if he fails to define his own policies, whatever bump he gets from the debates will fade quickly. There’s no substance to maintain a bump.

Start the debate by saying

“In preparing for this debate, I’ve spent a great deal of time studying Barack in an attempt to know him better. While there are many things we just don’t know about him, one thing I’ve determined is that when he’s filtering his words, he stutters and stammers. Back when he was a younger radical, he spoke without concern of his hatred for our country and did it without stuttering. Mr. President, tonight speak without hesitation or reservation about the America you know.”

Don’t get backed into discussing George Bush or Hurricane Katrina because of that stupid video that was released yesterday (which gave the Dems an excuse to revive the whole non-issue).

Do your level best to rattle Barry and get him off script. He is in trouble and he knows it. He is arrogant and has a VERY thin skin. He is just a gentle shove or two away from a massive on-camera meltdown that will cinch his defeat.

Romney ahs a big advantage as soon as he stips out on the stage with Obama; he is tall, handsome and robust.
He looks like a president straight out of central casting.

People will compare him to the skinny, jug earred, purple lipped Obama.

thats all he needs to talk about IMHO....that and

“Mr. President...things that have happened in Libya on 911 have yet to be explained clearly to the American public. Could you use this opportunity to give us a cogent explanation of exactly what went down ?”

Against Obama: Have a catchy one-liner to use for each issue. It must be a strong statement that makes the media want to ask you about it later.

For Romney: Have a simple plan for the economy, jobs, foreign policy. Keep saying: Obama did x. It’s serious and terrible. But I can fix it, and stay true to our country while doing it. Here’s how (simple plan).

Keep saying the the nightmare will be over. Prosperity for all and national security are both going to rebound if I am elected.

Don’t try to be a nice guy, folksy or any of that. Be a smart, rich guy businessman who can get the economy going. Your strong suit is being a strong suit.

This entry from the comments on a Yahoo! news story trying to put pressure on Romney gave me a chuckle:

Moderator: Governor Romney, Given that everybody hates you and knows you are not going to win, How will you address the deficit?

Moderator: President Obama, What is your favorite Jay Z song?

Moderator: We are rolling to commercial so Chris Matthews can hide his boner.

I would illuminate the potential of oil and shale production by using the “Dakota’s” as a model to lowering unemployment and raising tremendous royalty dividends that lower the tax burden for our citizens. With a national push to truly become energy independent, we will be able to modify our foreign policy to focus only on actions that are in America’s best interest. Currently we are at the mercy of the Islamic world.
