Exasperation builds on Day 3 in storm-stricken NYC
AP via Yahoo News ^ | 11/1/12 | LEANNE ITALIE and MEGHAN BARR

In darkened neighborhoods, people walked around with miner's lamps on their foreheads and bicycle lights clipped to shoulder bags and, in at least one case, to a dog's collar. A Manhattan handyman opened a fire hydrant so people could collect water to flush toilets. "You can clearly tell at the office, or even walking down the street, who has power and who doesn't," said Jordan Spiro, who lives in the blackout zone. "New Yorkers may not be known as the friendliest bunch, but take away their ability to shower and communicate and you'll see how disgruntled they can get."

***** ““We’re going to die”” ******

Before it’s over the cold and disease is going to claim more victims ... these folks just don’t know how to take care of themselves.

It is going to get a lot worse before it gets better

You live in a city. You don't know how to change a tire or oil. You don't know how to build a fire. You can't communicate without a cell phone. You can't fix your plumbing. You can't set up your own wifi. You're untrained in basic economics, chemistry, physics and history. You can't prepare food without packages, and aren't even aware that food has to be processed from root or bone before that. You only know and get paid for one very specialized task.

Yet you call me a "hick."

Too many people in too small a space with too much wind and water dumped on them. If you’ve never been to the 5 boroughs, you’d never understand.

Change a tire? I’ve known people who live in NYC and have never owned a car.

I saw that. Horrible.......

I lived in Flushing, Queens for 2 years. It's not like any place else. I'm not surprised at the devastation or people left with nothing.

The sniveling nitwits at MSNBC roundly criticized Romney for food donations. Seems Romney had a much better handle on what the immediate needs of the people would be than did Uhbamuh, Column Christie and MSNBC.

"remember the whole neighborhood that burned down. There could have been preppers located there and it didn't do them any good.

Excellent point.

Cities are death traps.

People live like rats in boxes at the mercy of everyone and everything.
Individuals have little control over their own destiny.

The overpopulation swamps every service and every escape route.
It magnifies the effects of every event.

Even a common snowstorm that is taken in stride in suburbs, towns and vllages becomes a mini-disaster when it moves through a city.

The plan? YOU WILL BE ON YOUR OWN FOR AT LEAST 3 DAYS MAYBE MORE. there is no way to set up a disaster pan that will cover that period. You can’t predict exactly where and when the disaster will occur. So you can’t preposition relief supplies personnel etc. the initial period will be figuring out what’s needed, where its needed and how you are going to get it there.

It’s not like Philly. It’s all connected with bridges and tunnels. People don’t own cars, they use the subway, taxis or buses. Most shop in neighborhood bodegas. Even a little water is a challenge. They got record surges. My friends husband has been pumping water since Monday. They haven’t made a dent. There’s no place for the water to go. It just rushes back in.

I agree but even the unexpected can come upon those that are prepared for almost anything. Not that I believe it but Achilles had one weakness that lead to his downfall.

Well, at least they could use their Cell Phones, as lomg as the Battery lasts, as a Flashlight.

That is if they remembered to download the Flashlight App before the storm hit.

I think it’s in the “Preppy Preppers” hanndbook. Too bad they only get in on a Kindle.

A Manhattan handyman opened a fire hydrant so people could collect water to flush toilets.

The fire hydrants are a different system from domestic water?

How does that work?

I keep wondering how long it will be before the comedy act of Shep & Geraldo will be on scene to save the world.

Perhaps they’re waiting for the cannibalism to begin.
