I'm interested in a 9mm or slightly smaller quality handgun that has a stock laser pointer. Comfortable carry and the laser are equally important.

You gave your brother some very sound advice. Lasers have their place but point shooting is not one of them IMHO. I say this because if you get used to looking at the dot first, it’s probably going to be too late.

You probably know this, but learning how to point shoot at varying distances is a lot of fun. And if you have the room to do it like your brother has (and can do it safely, of course), you can incorporate the other big part of defensive shooting, Move, don’t stay put!!

train with the old fashioned sight

99.9% of the time in an emergency self defense situation, the defender will not have the time to take aim with sites or laser.

You’re right. That’s why I recommend learning how to point shoot.

But, people still have to learn how to use their sights.

My hands on experience with semi autos is very limited. My daughter used to be a cop and I relied a lot on her opinion. She used Sig Sauer 40 cal as a cop. Does not like Glocks. As a civilian she decided on the Kahr P9. Partly because of its compact size fits a woman’s smaller hand well, and it’s concealable-ness. So I read reviews and then borrowed hers for a weekend. I thought about going with 40 cal, but I wanted my wife to train with and use it so decided to stick with the 9mm. I like it, simple and functional. I put the Hogue rubber grip on it, which was a real improvement. My wife likes it and that makes a big difference. In a crsis situation, I like that she doesn’t have to deal with a safety.

One thing my daughter warned me about is that Kahrs are noted for not feeding the first round well if you put the maximum rounds in the mag. Sure enough, it works a lot better if you load 6 in a 7 round mag. You can get around that by chambering a round and then topping the mag to 7.

My biggest problem is that I have unlimited free access to a friend’s private range within 15 minutes of my home. I am constantly sneaking out in the afternoon for an hour. Range fees are now zero, ammo costs on the other hand are getting painful.

I’ll second that on the Kahr CW9. I have had several other very small pistols, and this one is by far my favorite. It is a pleasure to carry and very accurate and easy to shoot.

LOL! I'm a life member at a range five minutes from my house, so I understand. I'm actually a benchrest shooter and even though I have semi-auto pistols, it's been years since I shot them. The Kahr 40 is just not very controllable even if it didn't have feed problems. No way to double tap with it. I'm going to look at other options for carry...9mm or maybe the S&W Bodyguard 38. I've never owned a revolver, but thinking that might be the way to go for reliability.

I have an Airweight 38. It’s got a lot going for it as a CC gun. But you have to practice a lot to get as good as you can with it because the tiny barrel is so limiting in accuracy. OTOH, with lots ($18 a box, lots of boxes) of practice I can do pretty well out to 12-15 feet, which I think is reasonable for its likely use. I can drop it in my front pocket when wearing jeans and you’d never know what it is. Very concealable. And it packs a punch. 158 grain rounds make it feel like a small cannon. As a revolver with an 8.5 lb trigger pull, you won’t shoot anyone accidentally.

Thanks. I’ll take a look at the Airweight.
