Senators have doubts about universal background checks for gun transfers
Washington Times ^ | March 31, 2013 | David Sherfinski

Senators from both parties signaled Sunday that universal background checks could be the next gun measure to get shoved toward the legislative scrap heap or significantly watered down.

Sen. Charles E. Schumer, whose bill to expand background checks to cover virtually all gun transactions, including private sales, has cleared the Judiciary Committee, said he is nevertheless hunting for a compromise on the issue.

“I’m working very hard with both Democrats and Republicans, pro-NRA and anti-NRA people, to come up with a background check bill that will be acceptable to 60 senators and be very strong and get the job done,” the New York Democrat said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “It’s very hard. We’re working hard, and I’m very hopeful that we can get this passed.”

Two Republican senators who are backing legislation to clarify the definition of people adjudicated mentally ill who are not allowed to own or purchase guns appeared skeptical that Mr. Schumer’s measure could pass the Senate as written.

Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona called universal checks “a bridge too far for most of us.”

“Well, the paperwork requirements alone would be significant, and even if there are exemptions for a father passing on a gun to his son or daughter, you’d still have issues with people in a private setting transferring or loaning a gun for somebody,” Mr. Flake said later on the program.

Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said that out of about 80,000 people who failed background checks last year, just 66 were prosecuted.

“Why in the world would you expand that system if you’re not enforcing the law that exists today to include private transfers?” Mr. Graham said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “So I think that legislation is going nowhere...”

I have a compromise for Chucky. We impeach him and send him to jail for violating his oath of office.

Open defiance combined with armed resistance is the only thing they’ll understand.

What would Michael Collins do?

Make your fire count.
Here's a list of the UBC squishy Republican Senators to contact:

Here's the roll call for that amendment, sponsored by Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch: There's been so much turnover since that vote that only 10 of the 47 remain in the Senate: Hatch,
Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran,
Maine Sen. Susan Collins,
Idaho Sen. Mike Crapo,
Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley
Arizona Sen. John McCain,
now-Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY),
Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts, and
Alabama Sens. Jeff Sessions and
Richard Shelby.
(Alaska Sen. Frank Murkowski also voted for the amendment; his daughter Lisa holds his seat now.)

They will try every trick in the book to bring about the total transformation of your USA. Bribes, threats and obviousy lying, on a regular basis. This anti-2nd push, is I suspect the big one.

I’ve seen this movie, it’s called Schindler’s List. I cried terribly at this real life story.

Told a friend who is very anti-gun and all she would do is take a breath, startled.

Told her I understood her reaction and feel free to make AchmaninnyJobs argument it didn’t happen.

This awful anti gun bill is DOA in the House, if it gets there.

That's why I'm not worried. Our freedom is defended by Speaker Boehner. And even if he fails, the Supreme Court has only one remotely plausible decision on a law that clearly infringes on our God-given right to keep and bear arms. It's inconceivable that anything could go wrong.

I have a GREAT idea. What say a “universal background check” for Obama? Now that sounds like a plan worth persuing.

Yep, they got this shocker on Sunday.

The libs on MSNBC are freaking out this week realizing that Obama might very well get nothing on gun control, err ‘gun safety’, after all his talk and demands.

The barkers Rev Al and Martin Basher are outraged at Republicans for opposing the will of the people, gun control.

Mika was shaking her empty head in disappointment at the GOP and Joe agreed.

Matthews was the most entertaining much to the distress of the libs on the show, HE BLAMED OBAMA FIRST HA-HA. He is upset that Obama didn't move faster to get something passed.

Blow-hard Ed Shultz has been shoved off prime-time to an 2 hour window on Sunday where no-one will watching.

Maddow and Chris Hayes (who took Schultz's) slot are avoiding the subject as they realize this is both Obama’s and their failure. Maddow cares about gay stufff first and Hayes obsession is climate change and green energy.

As Cartman once said on Southpark :'Their tears taste sweet'

Q: Why does a "soft tyranny" become hard?

A: Because it can.
