I immediately though of this movie about the E. German Stasi when these scandals broke a week or so ago, The Lives of Others. Has anyone seen it? Do you agree?

Yes you are missing something. That’s okay. Down below on the options line, click on the CC indicator and pick English.

That should take care of it. I just tested it, and the closed captioning works nicely.

I’m being repetitious of what others have said, but “The Lives of Others” is a great movie, and should be required viewing in every high school.

I wanted to mention some research I did this movie. The 360p version is very watchable. Upsize it to the middle size, and it’s quite acceptable.

This movie is easy to download. At 360p, it doesn’t seem like it would be worth it. I did so. I then sucked it up into my iTunes account. I made a jacket for it, I now have a copy of it.

The quality of the video is stellar for 360p. It’s easily watchable on my iPad mini, and I even used my HDMI cable to hook my iPad mini to my LG 55” 3D television, and it’s startling how good the picture looked. Simply amazing. It even looks very good in 3D.

The draw-back is that it doesn’t have the sub-titles.

I will say, if someone knows German, this is a very good find. You’ll appreciate the version they placed on YouTube quite a bit.

And on YouTube, they do have the English subtitles. Enjoy.

Indeed indeed indeed! I was actually watching it a few nights ago and thinking how miserably similar this poignant story is to where we are heading if not already there.

I agree on both your choices and your analysis is spot on. From my own personal perspective I feel that the director of The Separation, Asghar Farhadi, working under extremely harsh mullahcracy intimidation and censorship, did a superb job of communicating with the outside world the sense of schizophrenic fragmentation of life and daily persistence in the hyper-fundamentalist, superstitious, society of the ruling mullahcracy’s construct. In its essence the two films are the opposite side of the same totalitarian coin, aren’t they, and those who suffer are the same groups that don’t/can’t conform. Both very poignant affecting movies. He actually made another film that is even more engrossing than The Separation, in my opinion. It is call About Elly, and I was spellbound by that film. Asghar Farhadi will make a name for himself, I am certain. His newest, called “The Past” is getting rave revues at this years Cannes.

“The Lives of Others” is five stars; a must see. Interestingly, Ulrich Mühe (1953-2007) who plays Stasi Hauptmann Gerd Wiesler, was a victim of the Stasi’s surveillance practices. In an interesting turn about, he plays an officer of the very organization that had him watched.

The fact Mühe passed away soon after filming makes the ending that much more poignant.

Never have I watched a movie where I despised a character so much in the beginning, and in the end, felt compassion for him.

Thanks. I figured out how to turn on the subtitles, and just finished watching the movie. I was deeply moved. Hated Weisler at the beginning, forgave him at the end.

Thanks for your much better analysis of how state and religion can imprison the mind and control society. And you are right, it is all about control. Thanks also for the film recommendations.

What is fascinating to me is how the Progressive Left in America has adroitly manipulated the Biblical call to love your neighbor as yourself into love your State so it can help your neighbor.

Until recently ( the IRS scandals ) the Left hasn’t had to rely on the jackbooted power of the govt. It just had to PC the culture and entrap and enfeeble us with our basic inclinations to do good and feel important.

In Amerika it is so easy to control the people by simple appeals of ‘Saving the Planet’ or ‘Saving just one life or child.’

It’s the government schools, stupid, it’s the government schools! Dependency on Big Brother gov., pc indoctrination, post-faith/religion societies, undermining/breaking apart of all society’s traditional institutions that bind the community together under one guise or another, these are all the colorful eggs of the public school system that are hatching right in front of us. At the start, they always give, (”public” this and “free” that!) and then they take away, but we repeat the same mistakes of the past. Why did we think Americans would be any different than the rest of the world? It’s not the people per se that have made this country unrivaled and exceptional; it’s a simple(-looking) thin piece of document called the US Constitution that is the lifeblood of this unparalleled country — and don’t the obama left-wingers, if not all democrats, know it! That is why I became such an ardent Tea Party supporter. Can you imagine that: a lifelong democrat and immigrant and woman, turning to Tea Party as the only option left us to save this country from the freight train heading towards her?? Tea Party is about the Constitution. Tea Party means to safeguard the Constitution and reintroduce it to the basket-case zombies churned out by government schools: the concept and idea of the American republic and the American experiment envisioned through our Constitution. That’s why I have come to despise the left to such extend. They have become the embodiment of all who hate and all enemies and rivals to the American republic and Constitution. I truly truly believe this. That’s their entire goal, to water-down and choke the life out of the Constitution that has kept this country immune/resistant until now to the totalitarian big brother world unionist view of their dreams. These vermin will never be appeased until they have taken all. They want ALL! This is what I fear the American people are missing. But my bigger nightmarish dread is that perhaps it is us, the Tea Party supporters, who are missing something; that it is already too late; that we have already lost and we don’t quite see or understand it. God help us, may I be wrong.

Have you heard of the book The Last Duel by Eric Jager?

It is a true account of the last time (the year 1386) when a duel to the death ( knights on horseback with lances ) would legally determine the guilt or innocence of the accused party.

In other words God would decide who was telling the truth since it was believed that God would allow the innocent party to be the victor, and this would be accepted French jurisprudence of the day.

The case involves a squire’s wife who was raped by a knight. It was a case of he said, she said. The king decides that only God can determine who is in the right and hence the Duel. To heighten the suspense, if the squire loses; his wife will be burned at the stake for making false accusations.

It is a short book only 200 pages and quite compelling and thought-provoking. In a way it is like the film, The Separation, but with a Christian God deciding the outcome.
