Bible's strong comeback surprises secular Norway

It may sound like an unlikely No. 1 best-seller for any country, but in Norway — one of the most secular nations in an increasingly godless Europe — the runaway popularity of the Bible has caught the country by surprise. The Scriptures, in a new Norwegian language version, even outpaced "Fifty Shades of Grey" to become Norway's best-selling book.

The sudden burst of interest in God's word has also spread to the stage, with a six-hour play called "Bibelen," Norwegian for "the Bible," drawing 16,000 people in a three-month run that recently ended at one of Oslo's most prominent theaters.

Officials of the Lutheran Church of Norway have stopped short of calling it a spiritual awakening, but they see the newfound interest in the Bible as proof that it still resonates in a country where only 1 percent of the 5 million residents regularly attends church.

Hopefully a good sign that there is the begining of a comeback to our Jewish/Christian heritage.

With the hope of getting even the good news of the Holy Bible out to non-believers.

You mean, the Bible hasn’t been banned in Norway yet?

You can’t find something with nothing.

They’re likely looking around and discovering that militant secularism just can’t cut it in a battle with fervent Islam.

Probably the reason only 1% attend church is the state affiliations of the church.

The Bible will awaken new Christian trends. There may be a house church move that springs up.

After years of darkness of scandanavian dark pop junk like "Girl with a dragaon tattoo" and other existentialist garbage I'd say they are overdue for a sprititual renewal.

Thanks for the post.

The emptiness of post modernism and political correctness eventually chase people in the direction of the transcendent and meaningful.

The girl of the Dragon Tatoo series is kick ass when it comes to rapists. Maybe they could make a 4th movie where she kills muslims for raping her countrywomen.

Maybe, but somehow I think a steady diet of the timeless truths of the Bible is superior food for the mostly younger demographic who is into dark entertainment...especially the existentialist stuff of Scandinavia.

Of all the possible reasons that's probably about number 9,999 in importance.

A state church is a dead church.

Also, obligatory tithing keeps them away. I think these are strong contributing factors.

Byzantine Empire -- 1,000 years and the church persists even today.

I saw the English/Americanized version of the movie “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” (a year after reading the book), and while it was very closely tied to the book, at times it seemed to be just an excuse to have Rooney Mara naked on screen.
