Feds reversing course, will comply with order to allow girls of any age to buy morning-after pill

The federal government on Monday told a judge it will reverse course and take steps to comply with his order to allow girls of any age to buy emergency contraception without prescriptions.

The Department of Justice, in the latest development in a complex back-and-forth over access to the morning-after pill, notified U.S. District Judge Edward Korman it will submit a plan for compliance. If he approves it, the department will drop its appeal of his April ruling.

According to the department's letter to the judge, the Food and Drug Administration has told the maker of the pills to submit a new drug application with proposed labeling that would permit it to be sold "without a prescription and without age or point-of-sale prescriptions." The FDA said that once it receives the application it "intends to approve it promptly." Last week, an appeals court dealt the government a setback by saying it would immediately permit unrestricted sales of the two-pill version of the emergency contraception until the appeal was decided.

That order was met with praise from advocates for girls' and women's rights and with scorn from social conservatives and other opponents, who argue the drug's availability takes away the rights of parents of girls who could get it without their permission.

Advocates for girls' and women's rights said Monday the federal government's decision to comply with the judge's ruling could be a move forward for "reproductive justice" if the FDA acts quickly and puts emergency contraception over the counter without restriction.

Annie Tummino, lead plaintiff in a lawsuit over unrestricted access to the morning-after pill and coordinator of the National Women's Liberation, said women and girls should have "the absolute right to control our bodies without having to ask a doctor or a pharmacist for permission."

I’m sick of this “reproductive rights” crap. So, a 10 year old has reproductive rights? How about a 5 year old? Where does it end? These people are sick and perverted.

Can’t get asthma medicine without a prescription. Even the Republicans can’t get on board to make asthma inhalers available and yet this is okay? WTF.

It pisses me off - I almost died once were it not for a guy at camp having one and now besides costing a lot a person would have to go to the ER if they could not wait and jump through the hoops of doctors visits and a couple of hundred bucks for what should be 10 to 20 dollars.

Abby Johnson, former director of a Planned Parenthood branch, took the abortion pill thinking it would just bring on a heavy period and that would be the end of it. The abortion pill made her deathly ill for days. She was too embarrassed to go to the hospital.

This medicine is fire in the hands of children. They can't figure out how to use a condom yet they're going to follow label directions? It won't work if you're already pregnant, but do you think girls won't try to make it work, even taking extra? Girls are going to die because of this, and it will be covered up like the link between abortion and breast cancer is. Because preventing a woman from being punished with a baby is tantamount in this sick culture.

the pills are for when the 11 year old starts having periods. A good child molester (ie left winger) prepares years in advance.

Or for anybody with a brain. Who wants to be subject to a lawsuit when some 8-year-old dies of complications from a drug your store sold her?

Dead 8 year olds are good for the planet doncha know...

I feel sick thinking about the millions of children who will be raised by scumbag left wingers.

I'm not against the idea of getting Muslims to kill these vermin before they reproduce.

At least they have to buy them, he could have ordered the schools to dispense them for free!

"Seems like this would be a good reason for any store owner with integrity to simply refuse to carry the “product”."

This was my first thought also. Who the heck would be dumb enough to even carry this product for sale? Any major grocery store chain or even pharmacy would be nuts to have it on the shelf.

This I think will be the lefts unintended consequences. Soon You won't be able to find these pills for sale no matter how old you are.

When they first said age "15" my thought was the same. What store would carry it because how could a 15 year old prove they were 15 and legal to buy and not 14 or 13? They don't have a drivers license or ID. The obvious answer was the store would not risk carrying the product in the first place.

Why does an underage girl have “reproductive” rights but she doesn’t have the right to carry a few tylenol and take them if she gets a headache? Why doesn’t she have the right to take herself to a doctor and get immunized? If she needs surgery why doesn’t she have the right to give her own consent? If she wants to put cigarette smoke in her lungs it’s against the law but if she wants to have a man put a suction device up her vagina and suck apart an unborn baby that’s okay and if she wants to dump a bunch of hormones into her system well then the parents don’t need to know about that either.

Somebody has to be liable/responsible. These girls are not legally able to even consent to the sex they need the “emergency contraception” for; how is the law going to make them legally responsible for life-ending drugs that are out on the shelf for them to take?

If these girls have a right to “emergency contraception”, then why don’t I have a right to self-medicate diabetes, hypothyroidism, cholesterol, etc? Why can prescriptions be required on ANYTHING? The right to abort is more important than the right to have stable blood sugars?

DNA testing of all babies and abortion remains would within one generation free women from having to be raped at the age of 11-12-13 or younger. Once the men in the immediate family, or any other man in the community understand that their DNA will be linked to the child with an unknown father, society can do two things, (1) ensure the men are prosecuted and pay child support thus getting the girls off welfare, and (2) allow children to decide when they want to become sexually active consenting adults.

The ugly little secret is that many young girls at the ages of 11-12-13 are not promiscuous, but rather rape victims from members of their immediate family (read Uncles, brothers, or father figures in the home).

That is part of the next step.

If HHS (what an oxymoron!) doesn't force it on schools as part of the Obamacare package, look for a gov’t funded NGO to sue to recover this lost right.

It's fer the chillun’ ya’know.

That was my thought as well.

It allows a 21st century version of the castradi to be manufactured with less gore for the “owner”.

Looks like Beiber won't be the last kid to delay puberty for years in support of a Hollywierd/music career ...

Actually, that would make a decent screenplay - about a young coming of age boy who wants a girlfriend and dreams of one day being free of Big Studios.

Probably too far out for the music and acting crowd ...

I'm sick of this "reproductive rights" crap

Reproductive rights should mean that everybody has the right to reproduce. How can a pre-menstrual girl be given "reproductive rights?".

These pills, for older girls/women aren't about reproductive rights. They're about the right to destroy life. (ahhh....the mess carefully chosen language can make of the thought process)
