...IRS employees were accused of specifically targeting conservative groups for increase scrutiny over applications for tax-exempt status. Despite widespread evidence this wasn’t politically motivated — as well as signs it may have been justified — Republicans have continued to hold the controversy up as an example of government overreach.

Today’s story from the New York Times on IRS “filtering” should be the final word on whether this was political targeting or a more mundane instance of mistakes and misjudgments from overworked bureaucrats.

This is all a way of saying that, a year from now, we should expect Republicans to run hard on the IRS controversy in elections across the country, even as proof accumulates that this “scandal” isn’t very political at all.

Watergate was just a "mundane instance of mistakes and misjudgments." So proclaims the WaPo and this "journalist".

wow! that sure saves time.

Without the liberal press we would have had to go through that whole investigation, indictment, trial, etc. etc. etc. nonsense

It’s much faster if the press just proclaim their innocence!

I can’t wait until we have a Republican President so we can have an unbiased hard hitting investigative media again.

The head of the IRS division which did this took 5th before congress because answering questions about this matter would have implicated her criminally. How much evidence do you need?

My sister joined a Tea Party in Virginia. Three weeks later she got notice that she would be audited and has been yearly since. She is a stay at home mom.

Just a coincidence?

What is wrong with these people?
Have they no honor?
No ethics?

How can they look themselves in the mirror each morning?

It is a scandal that they refuse to report the news honestly.

No evidence of a scandal at the IRS?

Didn’t Lois Lerner herself, the director of the IRS Exempt Organizations division, state that the IRS was guilty of inappropriately singling out conservative groups for especially harsh treatment based on their politics?

And didn’t she try to hide behind the 5th amendment to avoid making additional statements that could be incriminating to herself?

People don’t plead the 5th amendment just because they are tired of talking to congressional investigators.

ATTN Compost: Not one targeted group has been interviewed by the FBI, nor could the FBI Director name the person in charge of the investigation.
