Snowden Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize After ‘Disrepute Incurred’ for Picking Obama By Andrew Johnson July 15, 2013 11:49 AM

A Swedish professor has nominated NSA leaker Edward Snowden for the Nobel Peace Prize for his revelations of the surveillance program, but also to redeem the award’s prestige after it was awarded to President Obama in 2009.

In his letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Umea University’s Stefan Svallfors argues that Snowden, who would be the award’s youngest winner at 30, exemplified that “individuals can stand up for fundamental rights and freedoms.” Svallfors lauded Snowden’s “heroic effort at great personal cost.”

In 2009, President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize after less than a year in office, drawing criticism for the committee’s prematurity, including from Svallfors. The professor says that picking Snowden would “help to save the Nobel Peace Prize from the disrepute incurred by the hasty and ill-conceived decision to award US President Barack Obama the 2009 award.”

According to the Daily Mail’s translation of his statement, Svallfords believes Snowden to be a “highly affordable candidate.” Similiar past nominees include Wikileaks’ Julian Assange and Bradley Manning, who did not win.

Compared to 2009, nominating a boll weevil would have been an improvement to its 'prestige'.

There are street hookers who would have a better reputation than the Nobel Peace Prize would, after they award Snowden. And before those street hookers began refusing to give up the home plate anymore, and only did escort work at parties for rich old men.

I disagree with your analysis. The people on the right who wanted whistleblowers to expose what was going on are NOT calling him every name in the book. It’s the folks labeled as “neocons”, the industrial complex types, the ruling class who are doing that.....not the common sense, liberty loving REAL conservatives. It’s becoming easier and easier to know who to trust and who not to trust in the Republican ranks with just this one issue.

It really is a useful Rorschach test. My only regret is Ollie North.... he denounced Snowden on FNC. I suppose I should search for anything Ollie may have written about this, his detail.

I know what you mean - Ollie North, Andrew McCarthy, and others have denounced Snowden......They are very good men, but they show me they don’t mind giving up my liberty, your liberty for what they perceive to be some security. The problem with what Snowden revealed is the random and all inclusive information being gathered and stored on citizens is unnecessary to enhance security now. BUT....it has the potential to be misused in the future. It is just a matter of when not if this information is used for the wrong purposes.

The Ollie Norths and McCarthys refuse to see how dangerous this is....they refuse to see the fourth amendment means what it says.

The thing is, those Neos are the majority right today. And they have the ‘organized power and control’ You and I and those like us are a fringe now. Most of the right decided lesser evil is OK and that compromising principle is the way forward. A look through ANY thread on a controversial topic here and any other ‘conservative’ site proves it.

I don’t like it either. But I refuse to deny what my lyin’ eyes show me every time I open a web browser.

Every year, there are these "______ was nominated for a Nobel Prize," from people who don't realize that the nomination process is basically meaningless.

Unrepentant murderer Stan Williams, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for writing a children's book.

Some developments... Putin actually talking in interview about Snowden on FNC a few minutes ago... this is getting too hot to handle.

If I were Snowden, I’d consider a few weeks on the International Space Station to regroup and I’m sure Putin would punch his passport personally to send him up there.

Those cartoons were created by 0bama supporters.

The terrorists have been fearful and mindful of using conventional communication platforms such as Verizon cell service and Google mail for over a decade now. Recall it was the leftists in our media who hated and exposed President Bush for spying on terrorists at home and anroad, and caused the terrorists to use less traceable means to communicate such as disposable cell phones.

It is 0bama and his regime that have taken this counter terrorism machinery, and used it to spy on and intimidate regular Americans who know what kind of clear and present danger that his regime poses to us al.

National Security has hardly been compromised by Snowden, as he has simply informed us all of the Orwellian machinery in place. The same machinery that was used to blackmail General Petraeus, and most likely SCOTUS CJ Roberts and SOH Boehner.

That said, Snowden is an avowed enemy of this openly hostile and anti-American “administration,” which has more in common with Stalin than it does with Reagan.

I would rather see Snowden continue to survive, and insult and expose these absurd and dangerous losers we have in our “government.”

I never read your post further than the first sentence....which revealed immediately your intent. Therefore that warrants no other response than this....

Prole’s ‘intent’? This is a discussion site, not a place where you smother forcefully someone who isn’t agreeing with you on your terms.

‘Intent’, indeed.

Even before the 2009 fiasco, it had been transformed into the Piss Prize.

really the Paul Revere of our time. What a discloser of the truth. The Government had taken the 4th amendment away from us and but for this magnificent servant of American citizens, we would never have known. Now we know and I assure you it will end. FREE SNOWDEN . He is a true American!!!
