My Nanny's Ramadan Fast
by Christie Tate
Ramadan, the holy month for Muslims, is under way, which means my nanny will fast from dawn to sunset every day. And that fasting means no food or water during the hours she will be watching my children. This is our third Ramadan as her employers and just like the previous two years, I feel a pit of fear in my stomach, worrying about her health and that of my children as she cares for them while the temperatures soar.
I know how this will go. For the remainder of the holy month, I will keep my phone closer than normal when I am at work. I will worry that she will pass out from dehydration while leading my 2- and 3-year-old children across the street. I will think about how light-headed and unable to focus I become when I go hours without eating or drinking water in the sunshine. Then I start picturing specific scenarios where she doesnt watch them closely enough at the pool. Or maybe shell space out while my daughter rides her bike with her wobbly legs and her inexpert command of the brakes.

Frankly, if I needed a nanny, I’d rather they learn Spanish.
Hes OK with putting his kids in a dangerous situation?
Nice parent...
Don’t listen to these mean people. This isn’t about the nanny or your children, it’s all about you. How you feel and how you want other people to feel about you.
She should be watching her own kids.
Problem solved. Now shut the he!! up about your psycho ‘look at me’ drama.
Not only are they being raised by a Muslim, their mother is a drama queen.
Agreed.
She should be concerned as during the hot summer her nanny could be very easy to get dehydrated or electrolyte depleted when you are not eating or drinking during the day. This could easily lead to impaired judgement, cardiac irregularities and even fainting and I especially hope the nanny is not driving kids in the car. Bad enough she is taking care of your kids but could you imagine having an employee doing this fast in a dangerous environment like a hot warehouse or a steel mill or while driving a bus or even piloting an airplane. The fast may have been no problem when the most serious effect might be falling off your camel, but in today’s world other people could be endangered.
WHO?
Kind of OT, but has anyone noticed if Benghazi Barry is wearing his ring during this time of Ramadamn?
I read somewhere wearing jewelry is not allowed during this time.
Yep, my first thought as well. But then those are just the children that she didn’t kill herself in the womb.
How completely, utterly confused can a mother be? She’s raising her kids with a combination of Jewish, Catholic and Muslim teachings. They’ll be so confused that when they grow up they’ll probably just skip religion entirely.
She wrote this screed just to let the world know how open-minded she is. An open mind gathers no truth.
“I will worry that she will pass out from dehydration while leading my 2- and 3-year-old children across the street.”
Stupid ^%$@(*! What would you do then? You put your children at risk (you just said it!) so as not to appear intolerant?
Get over your Noble Savage fixation and find someone with a compatible culture.
She says the nanny dresses her kids in burkas.
Clue... Get one
If so then she is insane for keeping her. She would be out my door in the morning.
