In a corner of the Shannon Rose Hill Cemetery, close to a chain-link fence that separates the living and the dead, a patch of ground has been worn free of grass by all who come to stare at one particular gravestone. With just a surname, the marker says it all: OSWALD.
But in the half-century since a slight, sallow man named Lee Harvey Oswald killed President John F. Kennedy, so much continues to be said about the assassination that the various conspiracy devices and theories are nearly as familiar as the tragic event itself. The Magic Bullet theory. The Zapruder film. The Umbrella Man. The Mafia. Jack Ruby. Fidel Castro.
And, of course, Nick Beef. Or, more accurately, NICK BEEF.
For the last 15 years, this curious name has vexed the obsessive assassination buffs who make regular pilgrimages to the Oswald plot here in Fort Worth. That is because a pinkish granite marker suddenly appeared beside the assassins grave sometime in 1997. And all it said was Nick Beef.
In their quest to make sense of a national catastrophe to find a narrative more acceptable than that of one gunman, acting alone some theorists have tried to divine meaning in a name that, more than anything else, evokes a private eye who specializes in agricultural intrigue. It added another question to their already exhausting list. Who was Nick Beef?
To begin with, Mr. Beef remains happily above the clay.
Affable, with gray-black hair slicked back, save for a stray curl or two, he sips tea at a cozy table at the Jack bistro in Greenwich Village, not far from his Manhattan apartment. With evident pride in possessing one of the more distinctive conversation starters in American discourse, he confirms that he owns the burial plot beside Oswalds.

With the gravestone planted, rumors and speculation took root. It was said that since the cemetery refuses to provide directions to Oswalds grave at the familys request, a spokeswoman for the cemetery said two reporters had bought the plot so that the curious could ask instead for Nick Beef. It was also said that Nick Beef was a New York stand-up comic who used references to the grave in his act. Assassination buffs swapped theories on the Internet.
so now we know where the beef is, or will be...
Perhaps he might have called himself Jack Ass. It seems to fit better.
Patric Abedin.
That will start a whole new conspiracy theory with Huma and the MB.
Good point.
Hard to take this seriously after such a deep opening as that.
This has me puzzled. I don't have the presidents itinerary at my disposal, but his last night alive was in Houston at the Rice Hotel.
Odd.
he was on the grassy knoll.
On Nov. 21, 1963, President Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline, landed at the former Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth as part of a two-day Texas tour.
This has me puzzled. I don’t have the presidents itinerary at my disposal, but his last night alive was in Houston at the Rice Hotel.

I think you’re right, that it was his last night.
As I recall, he flew into Fort Worth on the morning of the 21st, where there was a large gathering for a breakfast. He then flew to Dallas Love Field (only about 50 miles from where he landed in FTW). His drive through Dallas was supposed to end at Market Hall, I think, for a luncheon.
I worked 2nd shift at an airline at Love Field, so saw the killing live on TV. Went to work about 2 hours later and no flights in or out. Men with machine guns were on top of the terminal. Our windows viewed the ramp and AF1 was parked only about 200 feet away.
Watched the coffin, Jackie, JFK, Judge Hughes, etc., all board the aircraft. Took many hours to get back into a regular work routine.
After a little bit of searching, found more info. He did make an appearance in Houston on the night of the 21st at the Rice Hotel. He stayed his last night though in Ft Worth. That was a hectic schedule
Any relation to New Yawk's wannabe first lady?
LIE: Lee Harvey Oswald killed President John F. Kennedy
I hear you on this point. No one saw Oswald kill anyone. The man never had a trial.
Oswald's grave marker is not the original, but I'm unable to find anything on when and why the change in the marker was made. My guess is that it was done to make it more discreet, but I haven't seen that his wife signed on to that. I wonder if she's even alive.
I did find out that Oswald's mother is on the other side of him, but she doesn't have a marker of any sort.
From the subtitles on a 20 year-old French comedy, I'd suggest "JACQUASSE" for a touch bit more of marketing grist for the conspiracy aficionados.
