Rand Slams Congress for Funding Egypt's Generals: 'How Does Your Conscience Feel Now?'
Foreign Policy ^ | 15 Aug 2013 | John Hudson

Sen. Rand Paul is hammering his fellow senators for keeping billions in financial aid flowing to Egypt's military -- even as Cairo's security forces massacre anti-government activists.

"This is something that those who voted in Congress are going to have to live with," Paul told The Cable on Thursday. "The question is: How does their conscience feel now as they see photographs of tanks rolling over Egyptian civilians?"

As the official Egyptian death toll climbs to 638, the legislation the Kentucky libertarian is referring to was an amendment to suspend aid to Egypt until the country holds free and fair elections. Two weeks ago, Republicans and Democrats rejected it by an overwhelming 86-13 vote -- and top lawmakers in both parties protested it loudly.

"This amendment may be good politics, but it is bad policy," Sen. Bob Menendez, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said at the time.

"It would be a terrific mistake for the United States to send a message to Egypt: you're on your own," Republican Senator John McCain added back then. "I urge my colleagues to vote to table the Paul amendment."

The vote has already come back to haunt some lawmakers, such as McCain, who is now advocating a cancellation of aid to Egypt . . .

The Egyptian military is cleaning out the Mo Bros. I think we should continue supporting them.

I’ve been obsessively reading the Live Egypt thread for weeks... hard to keep up right now because of being very busy (the thread and my sort of “life”!) but I still read everything posted.

The MB is not going to win this. The large majority of Egyptians hate the MB and the mil and new government are cracking down.

Too bad Cruz and Paul are incredibly ill informed at the very least and taking the side of 0bastard, McCain, Linda Graham, and the Taliban - they all support the MB over hte military. The propaganda spewed by the MB is repeated by the MSM and is absolute lies, staged, photoshopped, etc.

If the good guys in deecee don’t even make an attempt to read or hear anything other than the MSM lie-fest or the US gov propaganda, that is very disheartening.

Both Pauls have a gaping blind spot as regards any possible shortcomings of Islam and its followers.

With all due respect, that is a dodge, not an answer.

I see you may have have a blind spot as well.

The same Muslim Brotherhood causing trouble in Egypt is already very involved in infiltrating our country. Does that bother you? Or, are you fine with Islam spreading in this country?

So, perhaps, like the Pauls, you do not have the moral discernment to call evil evil.

Consider what Winston Churchill said: “Islam in a man is worse than rabies in a dog.”

If Rand could say something like that, I would think he wasn’t completely clueless about the real dangers posed by Islam.

Tens of... millions?

But seriously, that number was made up by the anti-Morsi group Tamarod. I mean, I'm glad the dude is gone, but there isn't a need for hyperbole, the truth is convincing enough.

The fact is, Mubarak was about as good as it gets in that neck of the woods.

I read at least 22 million signed the petition, and more than that were protesting; IIRC the day with the most protestors was over 30 million in the streets on one day.

“Rand Paul is against giving taxpayer money to Egypt and he doesn’t care who is in power.”

1979 Camp David accords. But then it’s only a treaty we’ve been following for 34 years, but hey what is that compared to is run for president.

Thank you for posting this link. It’s beyond disturbing, but my gut tells me there is much truth in that blog article.
