Sun Unleashes Another Solar Storm Aimed at Earth
Space.com ^ | April 22, 2013 | Tariq Malik

The sun fired off an intense solar storm at Earth Wednesday (Aug. 21) — the second in two days — hurtling billions of tons of charged particles at our planet, but should not pose a threat to people on the ground, NASA says.

The solar eruption, called a coronal mass ejection, occurred yesterday at 1:24 a.m. EDT (0524 GMT) and sent charged particles streaking outward at 380 miles per second. That's just over 1.3 million mph (2.2 million km/h). The solar fallout from the sun storm is expected to reach Earth within the next three days.

We are all going to die! In less than 125 years, every man, woman and child now living on Earth will be dead!

Womyn and children will be hardest hit.

It is all Bush's fault.

Error, error...corrections follow:

The Obamadork fired off an intense stupid storm at the country Wednesday (Aug. 21) — the second in two days — hurtling billions of tons of putrid Obamastuff at our country, but it will only pose threats to people on the ground who actually create and do productive work, I say.

The sun is actually pretty wimpy this solar cycle.

CQ DX 6 meters. CQ CQ CQ.

That weird internet rumor about a “killshot” solar flare in September springs to mind. No clue how anyone is supposed to be able to predict such a thing, but the rumor is floating around.

Executive Order from Lord ‘Bama’ in his effort to stop global warming and save humanity he’s going to have all the electric shut off.

It has something to do with the Keystone Pipeline, Glo-bull warming and those evil Conservatives.

Yes it has been. Which is totally out of character for each of the cycles in the past few hundred years they have been monitoring them.

They fail to mention that these CME’s are reverse polarity and our magnetosphere that protects us from the CME energy is decreasing substantially. We are approaching a perfect storm that can only happen every couple of thousand years.

... 380 miles per second.

Given that light travels at 186,000 mps, it will disperse and will never get near us.

And it is all Bush's fault. Bush and those damned SUVs.

The only hope for mankind is for Our Glorious Leader to tax and spend more.

Seriously, the sun’s reversal of polarity happens every 11 years. A reverse polarity to the earth’s filed only happens at solar max every 22 years.

The magnetosphere field decrease happens every 2 to 3 thousand years. Like the tumblers on a combination lock, the two must align in order to create the perfect storm. You could say that each magnetosphere decrease has a 1 in 22 chance of alignment. This is why the reversals of the earth’s dipolar field are much less frequent...

Per Wiki:

A geomagnetic reversal is a change in the Earth’s magnetic field such that the positions of magnetic north and magnetic south are interchanged. The Earth’s field has alternated between periods of normal polarity, in which the direction of the field was the same as the present direction, and reverse polarity, in which the field was the opposite. These periods are called chrons. The time spans of chrons are randomly distributed with most being between 0.1 and 1 million years with an average of 450,000 years. Most reversals are estimated to take between 1,000 and 10,000 years. The latest one, the Brunhes–Matuyama reversal, occurred 780,000 years ago. However, a study published in 2012 by a group from the German Research Center for Geosciences suggests that a brief complete reversal occurred only 41,000 years ago during the last glacial period. The reversal lasted only about 440 years with the actual change of polarity lasting around 250 years. During this change the strength of the magnetic field dropped to 5% of its present strength. Brief disruptions that do not result in reversal are called geomagnetic excursions.

RRR. For those of us who have studied the sun for decades, reports like this are disgusting. Excessive hype on solar events that are common. Solar activity during this solar Cycle has been lower than the Cycle of the late 1960’s (Cycle 20.) Cycle 19 in the late 1950’s was the most active in our lifetime. This CME is aimed at the earth, but the effect will probably be a visible aurora that may be seen as far south as the mid-Plains States. Keep your cameras ready this weekend, nice visual, if you are lucky to catch it. VHF ham radio operators will probably call CQ A on 50mHz and above. de that op in CN85uj.

Last cycle I worked from Texas to California on 52.525 with a handi-talki (4 W, FM). Ain't been anything like that this cycle.

I'll have to make sure I'm monitoring 6 meters for a couple of days.

Why does the government allow this to happen? Clearly they should raise taxes.
