The White House announced on Thursday that it intends to ban almost all re-imports of military surplus firearms to private entities through executive order, which would effectively shut down the 110-year-old Civilian Marksmanship Program.
In a Fact Sheet published on Whitehouse.gov today referencing the upcoming executive order the ban on importing military weapons is designed to keep military-grade firearms off our streets. Exceptions for import may be allowed for museums.
The CMP tightly controls the importation of obsolete military weapons. The program was created by the U.S. Congress as part of the 1903 War Department Appropriations Act with the purpose of allowing civilians to hone their marksmanship skills, should they later be called into military service.

Is there a mustache in Mexico?
Well, we will need a good gun manufacture pony up for production of a modern Garand.
I am no fan of the AR type rifles. Except the 308 version.
My taste call for a bigger bore.
If the production run was large and the right gun company took it on, we would not need to re-import weapons. Some one like Savage who already makes an excellent rifle at a very reasonable cost.
Imagine what they would be able to do with a huge production run. Or closer to home, some enterprising gun manufacturer in Texas could do the same thing.
I suspect they'll bring it back, once the CMP supply dries up for good.
A real president wouldnt be using EO to do unconstitutional crap like this anyway.
It is NOT an EO, it is an executive action, big difference.
Plus, the CMP does not import any rifles. The rifles they sell are received directly from the Dept of the Army after the Army acquires them.
This EA is directed at Century, Blue Sky and others like them. It is to stop the privately owned 25,000 Korean rifles from being imported and sold via distributors, NOT the CMP.
You can go to the CMP forums and see where their director answers this.
Hell of a legacy for the first negro president.
Mine just went up in price...
So did my carbine.
POWERS LIMITED, OBAMA, BIDEN SEEK ACTION ON GUNS
One new policy will bar military-grade weapons that the U.S. sells or donates to allies from being imported back into the U.S. by private entities. In the last eight years, the U.S. has approved 250,000 of those guns to come back to the U.S., the White House said, arguing that some end up on the streets. From now on, only museums and a few other entities like the government will be eligible to reimport military-grade firearms.
The ban will largely affect antiquated, World War II-era weapons that, while still deadly, rarely turn up at crime scenes, leaving some to question whether the new policy is much ado about nothing.
“Banning these rifles because of their use in quote-unquote crimes is like banning Model Ts because so many of them are being used as getaway cars in bank robberies,” said Ed Woods, a 47-year-old from the Chico area of northern California.
They’re also going after gun trusts. . .
The Obama administration is also proposing to close a loophole that it says allows felons and other ineligible gun purchasers to skirt the law by registering certain guns to a corporation or trust. The new rule would require people associated with those entities, like beneficiaries and trustees, to undergo the same type of fingerprint-based background checks before the corporation can register those guns.
Using the rule-making powers at his disposal, Obama can only place that restriction on guns regulated under the National Firearm Act, a 1934 law that only deals with the deadliest weapons, like machine guns and short-barreled shotguns. For the majority of weapons, there is no federal gun registration.
Obama killed the re-importation of military rifles for the simple reason that we (meaning conservative guns owners) liked it.
Chicago thug politics - using your position to reward your friends and punish your enemies.
And here's the illustration they used in that story:
That looks a lot like “A Browning .50 Caliber Machine gun, left, and M240 machine guns are lined up for cleaning in U.S. Army barracks in Khost province, Afghanistan.”
As if we could buy them from the Civilian Marksmanship Program :-)
Well, lets hope that Congress is still sane enough to put this putz back in his place.
I am going to do my part by letting my congressman know clearly about my extreme displeasure with these Executive Orders. Doubt I will be alone.
There is talk of an Impeach Obama gathering in DC. Guess we will see if that will happen.
yes...just the other day there was a drive by and the perps used M1 Garands.
they could load it let alone shoot one.
They already have. You used to be able to get 8mm Mauser ammo for as little as 5 cents a round. Now if you can find it for less than 50 cents you snap it up.
No he doesn’t. The CMP does not “tightly control the importation of obsolete military weapons”. The CMP gets all of its firearms from the Army.
Many countries were armed after WWII under the Military Assistance Program (MAP) where they were LOANED firearms to rearm their military. Over the years as those countries declared the firearms obsolete, they were simply returned to the ARMY. Since the Army also considered them obsolete, they turned them over to the CMP.
Other countries like South Korea bought the firearms outright and now have a large surplus (up to 1 million rifles and carbines) that importers have bought and have been trying for years to get permission to import but have been blocked by both the Bush and Obama administrations.
Yeah, remember when everyone converted their 1919’s over to 8mm because it was so cheap?
I do. Now you can’t find any 8mm either.
