Trying to raise a family on a fast-food salary
Reuters (Opinion) ^ | August 29, 2013 | By Christine Owens-Wanker

Fast-food workers in more than 50 cities Thursday are striking for fair pay and the right to form a union — the biggest walkout to hit the industry.

What can we do to address this low-wage jobs crisis? Exerting pressure on the fast-food and retail giants that rake in billions in profits is a good starting point. These companies can afford to share more of their wealth with their frontline workers and should be doing so.

Boosting wages for America’s lowest-paid workers is a crucial step toward reducing economic inequality and rebuilding a strong economy. Perhaps 50 years from now, we’ll look back on the fast-food workers’ fight as the catalyst we so desperately needed.

This bimbo author should demand double her pay and then she would need to learn the phrase: “Ya want fries with that?”

Raise their wages.

Then cut their hours.

Ms. Wanker is awfully free with other people’s money. Typical liberal.

In contrast, loved Ashton Kutcher's speech that he not better than any job (even minimum wage jobs) he had and believed in hard work -

I think we should pass a special law that requires any business with a drive through window to pay their employees $50 per hour and contribute 25% to their 401k and provide them with no deductible heath insurance and 6 weeks paid vacation per year and overtime over 29 hours per week.

Additionally the employer must contribute $1500 per year for each employee’s child under the age of 26 for a scholarship fund.

I know I would lose weight under this plan.

Hey Christine, how about putting the blame where it belongs. And that’s with your Lord and Savior Obama. He’s single-handedly destroying virtually every well paying full-time job out there with the ObamaCare debacle.

Fast-food workers are in the lowest paid occupational category. The median hourly wage for frontline fast-food workers is $8.94 nationally. Many don’t even earn that. A shortage of hours further limits income. Fast-food workers work only 24 hours a week on average — at $8.94 an hour, this adds up to barely $11,000 a year.

This putz talks like it is a right to have a full time job.

Well guess what if you only work 24 hours a week at your job you have plenty of time to work a second job or look for a full time better paying job.

If these people want to know why fast food wages haven’t gone up they can blame Obama. It is Obama that has swelled the unemployment rolls and refused to deport low skill illegal immigrants. The reason low skilled jobs pay so little is because there is a huge surplus of low skilled workers.

Obama’s policies have put so many people on the streets looking for work that the fast food industry does not have to compete for workers. The law of supply and demand applies to labor as well as goods.

You may remember back in GW Bush's first term that fast food restaurants in many areas had to pay above minimum wage to get enough workers. Well welcome to the age of Obama when if there were not minimum wage laws fast food workers would be paid less than they are because there is a glut of low skilled labor thanks to Obama’s policies.

That is why it benefits them to be community agitators.

As I remember it fast food jobs are historically entry level jobs. Thats why so many high school and college kids work at Mickey Dee’s etc. Then the theory is that after a time you work your way up the ladder or train for a better job somewhere else. Its not supposed to be a career.

I think if a guy grew up in the 1970s and 1980s...they knew that the burger flipper job was just a temp phase, and no one ever stayed more than three years. Typically, if you were still around in the fourth year...you were now the shift supervisor, and by the tenth year...you might be leaning toward assistant manager of the operation. That was the only permanent phase a person could dream on.

I think over the past twenty years...people have dumbed themselves down several notches. I can’t say anyone...even those who have degrees....are all that bright. Most appear to be fairly naive, and lacking in common sense. Maybe it was TV....booze....drugs....or just plain laziness...but this isn’t the same society that existed in the 1980s.

Trying to raise a family on a fast-food salary

If you don't care enough about your own family to improve your skill set such that you'd be worth being paid more, why in the world should anyone else?

If you started a family without having gotten married and having a steady job, then what the heck were you thinking?

Boy that's tough. I'm pretty much with "Cool Hand Luke" ... "I never planned anything in my life"

I guess I have a certain number of virtues going for me, as I'm situated fairly well at this late point in my life, but planning ahead sure ain't one of them.

Get married to another fast food worker and, with careful budgeting, it can be done.

So; when all of the 22 to 45 year old losers and uneducated lame brains working at McDonalds on the counter and drive-thru
windows get their SEIU mandated raise. Do you think Mickey-D’s will stop making those obnoxious commercials that are aimed at a very specific ethnic and demographic group?

They were the jobs kids took in the summer and after school, folks looking to make a little extra, and those who just had no options took to make some money, but not a career track.

Actually that was true up until the country was flooded with illegals that would do do the work for the same price. Why hire a worthless kid when you can hire an adult for the same wage? Kids no longer need apply.

For the unions, it’s not about getting them any kind of raise. It’s the union dues. For example, with 1.4 million Walmart workers, assuming they were all fulltime and paying just a nickel an hour, the union representing them would earn about $140 million dollars per year. If the union were to represent all service workers across the country, we would be talking about billions in union dues.

Of course, we know the service workers being represented would be paying more than a nickel per hour.
