President Obama could lose big on Syria in House
Politico ^ | Sept 5, 2013 | By JOHN BRESNAHAN and JAKE SHERMAN

If the House voted today on a resolution to attack Syria, President Barack Obama would lose — and lose big.

That’s the private assessment of House Republican and Democratic lawmakers and aides who are closely involved in the process.

If the Senate passes a use-of-force resolution next week — which is no sure thing — the current dynamics suggest that the House would defeat it. That would represent a dramatic failure for Obama, and once again prove that his sway over Congress is extraordinarily limited. The loss would have serious reverberations throughout the next three months, when Obama faces off against Congress in a series of high-stakes fiscal battles.

Several Republican leadership aides, who are counting votes but not encouraging a position, say that there are roughly one to two dozen “yes” votes in favor of military action at this time. The stunningly low number is expected to grow a bit.

But senior aides say they expect, at most, between 50 and 60 Republicans to vote with Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who support the president’s plan to bomb Syria to stop Bashar Assad from using chemical weapons on his people. That would amount to less than one-third of the House Republican Conference.

I was just sitting here wondering what are the odds Obama would launch an attack on 9/11?

Definitely need the House to tell Obama to stick it on this loser.
Let Pelosi try to round up as many House Dem hypocrites as she can to support Obama on this stupid idea. Lets see how many of them are willing to swallow this dog crap sandwich for him.

This one is tearing the libs apart, About time too.

BTW : While Senate libs were trying to limit Obama’s options in that Senate bill, McCain and Grahmnesty held out till language was included that gives Obama even more freedom to do whatever he wants. McCain and Grahamnesty were fighting for Obama more than they were.

Too many ironies to list here.

Our country is broke. No money for foreign entanglements. No money to drop bombs.

It really seems to be a no-win scenario for Obama at this point.

If he waters down the resolution to make it extremely limited in scope -- to guarantee we'd ONLY launch a few missiles into Syria, and the bombing AUTOMATICALLY stops after a certain period of days, and Obama has NO whatsoever power to escalate or change the military action in any way... he might get more members of Congress willing to go along with it and approve a strike on Syria. But it's hard to see how that "limited action" would change anything besides wasting millions of dollars and killing a couple Syrian people.

If he widens the scope and follows the McCain/Graham strategy of leaving it open for him to escalate the war at a future date, and take whatever means are necessary to win, and have a set goal of regime change in mind, he just proves he's being a total hypocrite and starting his own Iraq War, and most members of Congress won't be caught dead going along with it, so he'd have to launch the war without their support and prove to be a bigger "warmonger" than Bush ever was.

Obama can also be readily bashed from both sides here... starts a war and either doesn't do enough to win, or starts a war and acts like a imposing imperialist bully that's out of control.

Weirdest side effect of all of this: the most OUTSPOKEN "anti-war" Dems from the Bush era are totally gung-ho neocon warhawks now and it's pointless to try and convince them otherwise (Durbin, Boxer, Franken, Howard Dean, etc.) But on the other hand, Obama's usual loyal ally and the most reliable Dem votes -- the black Congressional caucus -- is having serious reservations about this one. I'm in a "safe Democrat" district with a black marxist Congressman, and he's a "swing vote" this time around.

I wonder what kerry said to the arabs when they tried to hire the US for mercenaries. Was he indignant? Was he indifferent? Did he tell him to kiss his aristocratic ass?

I really don’t think Obama moves in without Congressional approval. I believe he saw going to congress as the only way he could stay out of Syria without losing face. Without losing his entire face at any rate.

Leave it to our Republican House leaders to side with Obama. Them siding with Obama and the Democrats is no surprise but it's still very disheartening.

RE :”It really seems to be a no-win scenario for Obama at this point. “

I really like your points but let me add that if the GOP was to save him by supporting this bill in real numbers it gives Obama room to claim co-blame to them for everything that goes bad.

Now I know that coblame strategy was very popular here and talk radio from 2004 through 2010 wrt Bush and Dems, that Dems support of Iraq invasion in 2003 after all that solid 'evidence' means it was really their fault too, but Obama will still be in a better position to make it work at least partially than GOP was just because of climate.

If the bill passes ??? we don't know.

But if it is killed especially if GOP Nos help stir lots of Dem defections (NOs) Obama is really going to take a big hit as weak and irrelevant.

If he still goes on attacking after losing this resolution, then get me butter on my popcorn. Its Obama showtime.

Obama’s in a pickle. The Republicans don’t trust him or his motives, and the Liberals hate war.

There is no more dimocRat party.

It sputtered after Kennedy and ended with Klintoooon.

It is the "liberal" party now.

They are CLUELESS; EACH AND EVERY ONE; Weasels, Godless, conspiratorial underminers, ALL.

Anyone who voted for Hussein Obama is not in agreement of the majority of America.

Yes, I have sadly been forever distanced from some friends and family over this voting debacle. Twice. How 'bout you?

And yes, my (our Patriotic clarity) is correct. Libs are not. They are not correct in any manner.

God Bless ALL actual Patriots. We are 50+ % of the Country, and we want the Country BACK.

Thank you to those who continue (and will always continue) to seek clarity, consensus and facts on any issue.

Thank you FreeRepublic.com for ALL you do.
