The Army's controlled burn has jumped past its containment line and is now burning a 72-acre parcel south of where it was supposed to stay.
The fire is still within the Army's secondary containment line but has required York School's students and faculty to be evacuated...
The fire is the latest in a long series of controlled burns intended to clear heavy brush so crews can find and remove hidden explosives left over from active operations at the base...

Well...a fire ought to find those pesky hidden explosives pretty quick.

Fort Ord is still around? I thought they closed that base. It housed the 7th Lt. Inf. if I recall correctly.
LOL.... 1965 - Drill Sergeant Nelson .... Strange to many, but I loved the guy. I was RA and only 17 1/2, so I was still very stupid and I actually enjoyed some of those days. The beach, I hated double timing in the sand.
The military still has a presence at Fort Ord, in the form of several California Army National Guard units, facilities administered by the Presidio of Monterey, and the continued operation of the base PX and Commissary catering to the active duty military stationed in the Monterey area as well as retirees who chose to settle in the area and are entitled to shop at such facilities. Management of the military housing has been outsourced to private firms, but the homes are still occupied by personnel stationed at the Presidio of Monterey and Naval Postgraduate School and retired military members.Source
My father was stationed there, beginning in 1949. We lived on base for a while until my parents bought a house in Pebble Beach, where several other military families resided.
