The Mormon church stands to own nearly 2 percent of Florida by completing a deal to buy most of the real estate of the St. Joe Co. for more than a half-billion dollars.

The megapurchase was announced jointly Thursday by a corporate representative of church, which owns the nearly 295,000-acre Deseret Ranches in Central Florida, and by the real-estate and timber business, which has built several communities along the Panhandle coast.

its funny to me that its not bigoted to say how much property is owned by Mormons. try inserting another religions name instead and see how that sounds.

Sorry...but here's the difference...While a LOT of what's produced on these Florida ranches is utilized for charitable purposes, that's not so across the board.

This article -- LDS Church ranch making big impact in Florida -- indicates that this "NON-PROFIT" entity has devoted "...450 acres of potatoes for Frito Lay Chips..."...

Not only is there wonderment at how it is that Mormon "volunteers" come to work this as some supposed "real healthy physical and spiritual mission field"...
...but tell us...how are for- profit entities supposed to be able to compete with churches operating as competitors in selling potatoes to corporations like Frito Lay? They aren't just getting huge tax discrepancies, but employ largely "slave labor" as well!

And, btw, this isn't simply a problem with the HUGE swath of Florida land...even Mormon potato growers in Idaho have been complaining [The Mormon owns a LOT of such acreage in states like Idaho and Washington]

Declo farmer Mark Darrington, however, is also concerned the church intended to take over management and does not see that as being in the best interest of his community. "I am an active member of the Mormon Church, but facts is facts,” he said. “I did not want them to turn this into a big corporate farm because of the impact on the local community.” For one, he said, “local vendors are bypassed. I think that puts a bad taste not just in non-members’ mouth but also in members’ mouth.” ...He said the church setting up a large entity and garnering large potato contracts would have an adverse effect...“The church tends to not cooperate with growers,” he said.

As far as I can tell, the central objection is that a particular religion (or cult, depending on your point of view—just being fair) is spending money on something rather than something else.

Read the posts, read the thread, this is about a religion and their finances.

So what? Nobody’s holding a gun to any Mormon’s head forcing them to stay in that church.

And most of the 800+ who died at the Jonestown cult compound didn't have guns to their head as they took the koolaid...

And the San Diego Heaven'sGate cult that also committed suicide -- thinking it 'twas some gateway to meeting aliens -- also took it willingly.

Are you going to lamely endorse their actions as well?

(Hint: There's such a thing as hell; and there's such a thing as committing spiritual suicide)

Try reading the objections raised in post #41...

For profit competitors attempting to sell potatoes to Frito Lay don't stand a chance with the Mormon church's non-profit tax breaks & slave labor.

2nd div: The opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference...not caring...

Surely your parents raised you with some Christian moorings...

Why are you so indifferent to the plight of people headed toward hell?

I totally follow what you’re saying, and there are definitely issues, and getting so called volunteers raises eyebrows. but it really, to me, doesn’t change my point that in this country, we really have developed a culture where we don’t point things out while identifying a religion.
we certainly don’t say, for example, how come the federal reserve is 99 per cent jewish, as are Hollywood producers, new York money managers, etc etc.
shouldn’t we ask the fed should be more diverse?
shouldn’t we demand that money manger’s be more open to minorities?
so I don’t know that we can point to Mormons the way we don’t point to other groups.

So you’re on a one-man crusade to save everyone in the LDS, RLDS, FLDS and etc. from hell? Seriously?

I think you need to brush up on your Bible a little bit, there is only one Judge and it is certainly not you...

James 4:11-12
“Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?”

The Mormon community is on the rise because:
1. They are family oriented
2. They show their commitment to their religion by performing missionary work
3. They help each other out
4. They are more conservative politically than some other mainline religions
5. They actually have kids.
6. They have awesome prepper info. They are also required
to prepare their homes for tough times.

I am not a Mormon, but I don’t begrudge their success.
