Butterball has shortage of unfrozen, large turkeys, according to Big Y officials

SPRINGFIELD - Butterball has just announced to officials at supermarkets around the country, including Big Y World Class Markets, that there is a national shortage of their large fresh (unfrozen) turkeys for this Thanksgiving.

A mistake was made in the production of fresh Butterball brand turkeys this year and the company has cut every retailer's allotment by 50 percent, said Claire D'Amour-Daley, Big Y vice president of of corporate communications. The cut represents thousands of turkeys that would have been shipped to Big Y. The same goes for every other retailer, she said.

Butterball's corporate offices did not return calls for comment.

D'Amour-Daley said Big Y has larger fresh turkeys from other brands, frozen larger Butterball turkeys and unfrozen smaller Butterball turkeys.

This shortage involves only Butterball brand large fresh turkeys of 16 pounds or more and not frozen Butterballs of any size or smaller weight fresh Butterballs.

Full title: Butterball has shortage of unfrozen, large turkeys, according to Big Y officials; other Butterball turkeys, brands available

I looked around the net for other articles and this is the only one so far about this apparent national problem. 50% of birds 16 lbs and over is a huge production miscalculation. Cutting every retailer 50% of their orders in this weight class with this brand will lead to shortages across the board. Buy early and often :)

Production mistake? Or was there a mass turkey escape that they don’t want to tell us about, hmm?

Don’t worry about it. There are plenty of big fat turkeys in DC.

I don't buy the "miscalculation". How can they "miscalculate" by 50% on something they do every year, and for which they have many years of sales data?

Sounds more like they are tightening belts, and are unwilling to risk have any unfrozen turkeys in inventory post-Thanksgiving.

Ask Les he knows the real story behind this shortage. It has something to do with helicopters and the fact that turkeys can’t fly. Film at 11:00

I had goose with some friends in the late 80’s. Scrumptilicious! Imagine the best of duck and turkey, combined.

We were all watching wkrp the nite it

was first shown.

The whole family was about falling out

the chairs from laughing so hard.

Good decent shows back then.

Today sleeze like Miley Cyrus is the norm.

A mistake was made in the production of fresh Butterball brand turkeys

This is what happens when you let liberals control the FDA.

1 gobbler + 1 hen = 1 fertilized egg.

I don't care what the turkey identifies as.

Big Y is saying Butterball had a mistake in the production
(I shouldn’t have written miscalculation in the comment)
if this is true that is a lot of birds.

Most people buy 16+lbs for Thanksgiving -barely anyone buys the smaller birds in comparison to the larger ones for this holiday.

Something screwed up pretty bad to have 50% of the volume slashed for the whole country, and being told today - so close to Thanksgiving - is very sort notice.

I’m still not seeing this story anywhere else so who knows...
