LONDON -- An IT worker threw out a computer hard drive without realizing it contained $7.5 million worth of the digital currency Bitcoin. The device is now buried somewhere in a vast landfill site. The hard drive is so valuable because it contains the key to 7,500 bitcoins [now worth $1,000 per coin], a currency which exists only in the digital world.

The device is now buried somewhere in a vast landfill site. Or in his backyard.

Not surprising. I run into IT people all the time who wipe their hard drive and then wonder why they don’t have their files.
Because you deleted them?

If bit-coins are that irretrievable then they're a bad idea.

I watched a show on BitCoin the other day and it is the most bizarre monetary
scheme scam I've ever seen.
The guy on the show has written a book promoting the things and his explanation of how it works left a lot to be desired.
He said he put most of his money into it at $11. When I saw the show it was at $400 and the following week it was $600.
That was two weeks ago and now it's $1,000. Where is this money coming from? It's like putting $100 in the bank and finding out you have $500 the next week. It doesn't make sense.

Can somebody post a link to a bitcoin primer that explains the concept in terms people here can understand?
I'm clueless.

Why didn’t they think to make a backup? Hard drives fail all the time.

RE: “It doesn't make sense.”
Believe it or not, the financial dynamics of Bitcoin “value” are almost identical to all other market traded fiat currencies.
The biggest difference, of course, is that no nation and no Central Bank stand behind Bitcoin.
“Stand Behind” is a debatable point, of course.
To a great extent, the US Dollar and Yen and Euro are just worth what traders and bureaucrats and bankers SAY they are worth.

Well, no. Wrong. But thanks for the guess.

If bit-coins are that irretrievable then they're a bad idea. Well if you threw your cash in the dumpster, it would be irretrievable too.
