Girl banned from selling mistletoe in park to raise money for her braces - but told she can BEG (OR)

A young entrepreneur was baffled when a Portland security guard thwarted her attempt to help her father pay for her braces by selling mistletoe - but told her she could beg, instead.

Madison Root, 11, arrived bright and early at Portland Saturday Market, setting up a sign and basket next to the Skidmore Fountain in the downtown area to sell her wares to the crowds.

... Madison Root knew her upcoming orthodontic work would be expensive, and wanted to contribute.

She spent Friday cutting mistletoe at her uncle's farm in Newberg, then wrapped it in clear cellophane and tied it with a red ribbon.

Her father, Ashton Root, supported his daughter's work ethic and drove her to the market on Saturday morning.

Disappointed: Ashton Root says his daughter would rather work than beg

She wasn't told to "beg." She was told she could sell it outside the park, or ask for donations without a permit.

They basically suggested exchanging the mistletoe for a "donation." In the meantime, all the other vendors have permits.

It only helped her cause by going to the media. I wonder how many vendors w/permits use their proceeds to support their children/families.

I think that’s called ‘ballistic harvesting”?

The problem, of course, is government officials who believe it is necessary to hold children to the same business practices as adults. In a family friendly culture children are given leeway to learn to make money through their efforts. As a kid I picked blackberries and caught soft crabs to supplement my allowance. Had I been required to purchase a license those activities would have been impossible.

Selling is conducting a business. Leftists don’t like any business that they aren’t controlling, damaging or taxing.

Begging is what poor people do, and they are victims, so that’s all right.

In other words, the left would rather have people poor and begging rather than working and earning money.

It’s a good thing she didn’t have a lemonade stand.

the determined 11-year-old has decided to return to the market with her mistletoe on December 14 for what she is calling 'The Great Kissoff.'

I can't wait for December 14th for that.

It appears this child got a break with the suggestion of saying "donation."

Her father was with her. Maybe he should of bought her the permit, since now he won't have to pay for the braces.

It's not like she was selling lemonade on her front lawn. She was in an established market venue.

I was born and raised in Oregon. My grandparents had a place in Newberg and a cabin on the coast. I spent much of my youth on the Oregon coast. It was a beautiful place to live and a wonderful time in my life.

Oregon has become such a disappointment. Dear God I miss the old days….

You gotta get up early and get into the tall reeds near the lake and use the whistle... then the Mistletoes will come close enough for you to bag them.

The fact is that these types are laws are nothing but open-faced PROTECTIONISM!

Older companies have larger overhead costs, long-term lease contracts, etc... and the new guys are smart enough to NOT have these burdensome costs. So, the existing companies got the city to write an ordinance that makes it harder for new upstarts to compete against them. Of course, city hall, with their brown-bags of cash tucked in their back pockets, stand up and say these laws protect their citizens from the droves of smarmy, traveling, snake-oil salesmen (because we all know that the swarms of Gypsies are stealing most Americans blind!)!!

The only thing these types of laws do is discourage growth, hurt the economy and stop entrepreneurs from doing business in your town!

I had a friend in college who bought a big box of 1 oz. KY jelly tubes and glued safety pins to them. Sold them in NYC to the GLBTQ crowd for $5 each. Big money selling to, a “protected minority”.

They basically suggested exchanging the mistletoe for a "donation." In the meantime, all the other vendors have permits.

What does that "permit" do for her? What does the permit do for the customers? Does it make the sale "better?" Does it ensure the citizens are protected in some manner? I will bet that it doesn't do ANYTHING except get money into the coffers of the city.

I lived in a city that required you to get a permit to replace your own hot water heater. Why? Because they wanted $25, THAT'S WHY! AND they charged you an ADDITIONAL $20 to haul off your OLD hot water heater! They did not inspect the installations. They did not do ANYTHING else concerning the replacement. But, if you put a hot water heater out on your curb and didn't have a permit on file, they would charge you the $20 for haul-off and an additional FINE of $50! I replaced my mother's hot water heater (in a different city) but put the heater on my curb (expecting to pay $20, but got a $70 bill)! Her city did not pickup large items and $20 was cheaper than the cost to go to the dump. Overall, it cost me lots of time and MORE than $150 for a lawyer to get the FINE removed - I fought it for the principle and they eventually dropped the permit requirements for hot water heaters.

Permits don't make things better, unless there is an actual purpose to the permit! I will bet that this permit is nothing more than protectionism and city-based money-grubbing.

The water heater permit sounds ridiculous. But, so is the attention to this news story. There are permits/fees for markets, fairs, etc., for insurance, maintenance, utilities, etc.

These people twisted what the security guard said trying to help the girl out. Today I read she has made enough for her braces and then some. So what has she learned? Stick it to someone trying to help you...LOL
