MOSCOW — Russia has deployed short-range ballistic missiles in the country’s west, a move that it contends does not violate international treaties, the Defense Ministry said Monday, though it conceivably would allow Russia to carry out a precise strike against the Baltic nations and Poland.
The deployment of the Iskander missiles, which have a maximum range of about 250 miles and are capable of carrying conventional or nuclear payloads, has often been threatened by Russia as a response to proposed extensions of an American missile defense shield in Eastern Europe. However, the announcement on Monday was the first official confirmation from the Russian government that the Iskander systems may already be deployed within striking distance of NATO countries in Europe.
“Iskander rocket complexes are indeed standing armed with the rocket and artillery divisions in the Western Military District,” a region that includes Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave between Lithuania and Poland, said Igor Konashenkov, a Defense Ministry spokesman.
Mr. Konashenkov was quoted by Russian state news agencies as saying that the locations of the missiles “do not contradict any international agreements or treaties.”

Back during POTUS #43 GWB’s watch I remember thinking that when he wanted to move ABM technology into Eastern Europe that it was a violation of the START/ABM treaties. I have always thought that GHWB/WJC/GWB lost the 2nd Russian revolution.

China and Russia have been holding joint war games since 2005. They’re doing it in preparation for war against the WEST. Not each other.

The inside dope on those war games is that the Russian’s show theirs and the Chinese doesn’t. The games have been tense and the Chinese are clearly using them for intelligence gathering. They’re done for show by two countries that do not trust each other. Russia is trying to form alliances with countries surrounding China to thwart Chinese ambitions. By all appearances there is a cold war brewing. Also, Siberia is empty and has oil. If you look at the satellite pictures Siberia is dark, but right across the border it’s crowded.
Although Russia’s population has recently started growing they’ve spent a long time at less than replacement numbers. (China is also facing demographic problems, but they’re starting with many more people.) Also, China appears to be entering an expansionist phase. Russia is fighting a population collapse. (Russia is countering their problems well. But, so is China. It’s just the US that’s not dealing with our issues, which are mostly government caused.)

Germany and Russia were pretty cozy militarily from the 20s thru the 30s, but that didn't work out so well in the end.
I would point out that Germany and Russia kept up a front when both sides knew they’d end up fighting. Putin is an excellent leader. But China continues to screw everybody they deal with. They have, for instance, repeatedly stolen Russian arms technology and sold it to the world. China is out just for China. As Churchill said, “Nations don’t have friends, nations have common interests.” China has only China’s interests at heart. They’ll take anything on offer, but the deal is only a win/lose as far as they’re concerned.
Russia and China have more common goals than did Russia and Germany.
China is an oil importer...it wants cheap oil.
Russia is an oil exporter...it wants expensive oil.

WASHINGTON, March 26 (UPI) -- The continuing tensions over Russia's refusal to sell its state-of-the-art land warfare advanced weapons systems to China hasn't interrupted the rhythm of major joint military exercises between the two major land powers on the Eurasian landmass. The latest in the regular, biennial series of exercises between the two nations has been confirmed for this summer.
The next in the now well-established series of exercises called Peace Mission 2009 will be carried out in northeastern China, the Russian Defense Ministry announced March 18, according to a report carried by the RIA Novosti news agency.
The first bilateral Peace Mission maneuvers -- described at the time as counter-terrorism exercises -- were held in Russia and the eastern Chinese province of Shandong in August 2005. As we reported at that time, they were a lot bigger than mere counter-terrorism exercises. Warships, squadrons of combat aircraft and more than 10,000 troops were involved carrying out landings against hypothetically hostile shores. The maneuvers also involved large-scale paratroops drops. The scale and nature of those exercises suggested a trial run for a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan with Russian support. ..."

Russia, China flex muscles in joint war games

CHEBARKUL, Russia (Reuters) - Russia and China staged their biggest joint exercises on Friday but denied this show of military prowess could lead to the formation of a counterweight to NATO.
"Today's exercises are another step towards strengthening the relations between our countries, a step towards strengthening international peace and security, and first and foremost, the security of our peoples," Putin said.
Fighter jets swooped overhead, commandos jumped from helicopters on to rooftops and the boom of artillery shells shook the firing range in Russia's Ural mountains as two of the largest armies in the world were put through their paces.
The exercises take place against a backdrop of mounting rivalry between the West, and Russia and China for influence over Central Asia, a strategic region that has huge oil, gas and mineral resources.
Russia's growing assertiveness is also causing jitters in the West. Putin announced at the firing range that Russia was resuming Soviet-era sorties by its strategic bomber aircraft near NATO airspace.

War Games: Russia, China Grow Alliance

In foreign policy it’s critical to “know thine enemy.” So American policymakers should be aware that Russia and China are inching closer to identifying a common enemy — the United States.
The two would-be superpowers held unprecedented joint military exercises Aug. 18-25. Soothingly named “Peace Mission 2005,” the drills took place on the Shandong peninsula on the Yellow Sea, and included nearly 10,000 troops. Russian long-range bombers, the army, navy, air force, marine, airborne and logistics units from both countries were also involved.
Moscow and Beijing claim the maneuvers were aimed at combating terrorism, extremism and separatism (the last a veiled reference to Taiwan), but it’s clear they were an attempt to counter-balance American military might.
