Most chicken sold in stores is contaminated, Consumer Reports says
Oregonian ^

A report released Thursday indicates that just about all chicken sold in U.S. stores contains harmful bacteria, and nearly half are tainted with a so-called superbug that's resistant to antibiotics.

The Consumer Reports study, its most comprehensive to date on poultry, tested raw chicken breasts purchased at retail outlets nationwide for six bacteria, then checked for antibiotic resistance. The results showed nearly half of the samples were contaminated with at least one bacterium resistant to three or more classes of antibiotics, what's known as a superbug. Slightly more than 10 percent were tainted with two superbugs.

That finding is cause for alarm, said Urvashi Rangan, a toxicologist and executive director of Consumer Reports National Research Center.

"We're in a public health crisis," Rangan said. "Pharmaceutical companies are not making new antibiotics."

I had to give up many processed foods like canned Canned ravioli and chili foods because of the MSG (my body wont tolerate) and the salt saturation.

I used to eat tons of that crap as a young adult.

In this part of the world, we have Hutterite colonies (Anabaptists like the Amish and Old Order Mennonites). They are self-sufficient communities that often sell produce at local farmer's markets. In addition, people often buy fresh chickens, by the dozens, from the colonies. In general, they have more, and better flavour than anything from a supermarket. Personally, I have never had occassion to travel to a colony, but I've heard that you would be wise to have a 'gift' of bargaining if you go purchase something from a colony. (I include the third picture because of all the talk of Duck Dynasty in the news today!

Incidentally, in the past, healthy young men from outside the colonies, have been hired for their 'stud' services, helping raise their numbers from under 1,000 to 40K+. Their colonies are mostly in the Great Plains region, mostly in Canada but also some in the US. Often, on Wednesdays and Thursdays they come to town, in groups of ten to twelve, in well appointed, full size passenger vans. They shun certain modern coveniences, but their community farms usually have the most modern equipment available.

Honestly, I think in 20 years, meats and produce will be irradiated, milk too.

The upcoming tech generations have a lot less fear of the word radiation than their parents and grandparents, because they don’t remember the cold war.

Great idea for milk. Wouldn’t have to pasteurize it.

This is why I handle all poultry in the kitchen as if it’s contaminated with toxic waste.

I perform much hand, cutting board, and utensil washing after ever contact with raw chicken. When handling large quantities, I actually use throw-away gloves.

Bacteria and their toxins are basically on the surface of the meat, so carefully rinsing the raw chicken is a good thing too.

Dont they put stoves in house kitchens in your parts Daniel?

They get hot and cook the food, but I suggest reading the manual before trying one.

Those Mennonite girls are great.
They will catch the fish, clean the fish and cook the fish.
I used to kid my son that I was going to hook him up with one.

He wasn’t having any.

I bet he is sorry now LOL

I used to frequent a restaurant that was run by a Vietnamese girl.
I ordered the spicy ginger fried catfish for lunch one day.
She says you come back tonight (she knew I only had an hour for lunch)
I said why tonight?
She says, take long time.
First I have to catch the fish,
Then I have to clean the fish,
Then I have to cook the fish,
Gonna take long time...

LOL
