Baton Rouge, La. – Magellan Strategies BR’s statewide Oregon survey results show U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley’s reelection campaign may have to make a stronger than expected push with Oregon voters next fall. When asked if Merkley had performed his job well enough to deserve another term, only 33% of likely midterm voters supported his reelection (25% definitely reelect), while 43% felt that it is time to give a new person a chance (34% definitely new person).

We currently have four Republicans running for this senate seat, with a possible 5th getting in later. Only one seems to be a strong candidate at this point, but this poll is certainly good news for Oregon Republicans.

Most of the candidates look second tier. Which one do you think is the strongest ? OR doesn’t have much of a bench of candidates, and has been overrepresented by Democrats for far too long.

Jerkley, as I like to call him, is vulnerable. All those Demonrats we considered safe some time ago, Shaheen and Udall included, need to be run out of town on a rail. Make 2014 a tsunami

In the Reagan revolution second tier people like Dick Armey ran in “safe” yellow dog democrat seats and won big. He was a prof at North Tx college with no history in party politics. Maybe that is what is needed - he was pretty good for about 6 years and then got full of himself and became part of the problem.

What about former Sen. Gordon Smith? He wasn’t a movement conservative but seemed to be pretty decent. Would he run again?

I haven’t heard anything about Smith in ages. I don’t think the rank and file would look kindly on his stepping forward. Considering we’re in a blue state, there are lots of Tea Party Republicans at the county level. Smith was willing to work closely with Wyden, and that means moving to the left.

Monica Wehby, a pediatric neuro-surgeon, certainly has the brains. She seems very personable. I haven’t seen enough of her yet to know all of her positions. There are several candidate forums coming up next month, and I hope to get a firmer grasp of her stands then.

As a life-long Oregonian, I don’t think it matters who votes in Oregon anymore. It’s who counts the votes.

How about Art Robinson—or Dennis Richardson?

Dennis Richardson is running for governor, and Art Robinson looks like he’s going after DeFazio again. I’d rather see Senator Doug Whitsett as governor, personally. And Art has not covered himself with glory so far as OR Republican Party chair. Getting strong conservative Republicans to run is certainly a problem for us.

A friend of mine saw Ms. Wehby at a 9-12 event....not impressed....she didn’t seem like she wanted to be there...went thru her speech fast, and then ran out....and like many doctors her speaking manner was for the bedside

It’s who counts the votes.

Multnomah County is one of the most corrupt in the country, right up there with the Chicagos and Phillys. Only everyone knows Chicago's and Philly's reputation. Oregon is supposedly squeaky clean. And so the thugs there can get away with murder.

Monica Wehby got badly roughed up by some of Jason Conger’s campaign folks at a meeting down in Madras (I think). It might have made her a tad gun-shy. Certainly she’s new to politics & it might take her a while to get her act together.

I’ve already dismissed Jason Conger as a possibility, even though he’s in a state house seat. He went out of his way to dismiss any Tea Party connection while being interviewed on talk radio, & as I noted above, his campaign people enjoy dirty tricks. Mark Callahan has seemingly ‘experimented’ with a multitude of groups. I’m not sure what the point was for that. Finding the most suitable group, maybe? At any rate, he’s young & has not held office at a lower level. JoRae Perkins would also be better off working for a seat at local gov’t - county commissioner or city council.

Ms. Wehby is the most personally accomplished of the lot. And her credentials as a doctor - specifically a pediatric surgeon - would be a boost for the female vote. Time will tell...

I don’t know....I don’t think she’s bad looking, but I have not seen her in person...and I’m a woman....so....FWIW
