In a briefing late Tuesday night, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal deflected criticism for the traffic nightmare plaguing Metro Atlanta saying in part that the crippling weather was "unexpected" and that government officials made preparations based on forecasts that called for "the majority of the effects of the storm" to be "south of here."
"We have been confronted with an unexpected winter storm that has hit the metropolitan Atlanta area," the governor said.
But a timeline of winter storm watches, warnings, and advisories paints a different picture, one that shows that the governor and other government officials had nearly a day to prepare for significant impacts from Winter Storm Leon.

Sound familiar? Do the names Ray Nagan and Kathleen Blanco ring a bell? How about Katrina & New Orleans?
This is one the head of the Mayor, Mohammet Kasim Reed. Who was at Davos last week, listening to Al Gore. And taking positions on gay marriage.
Funny, the airlines knew about it in advance. Mid-afternoon on Monday a colleague of mine who was flying through Hartsfield got notice that his Tuesday evening flight had been cancelled.
They can’t get a clue from a weather forecast for this week, but think they KNOW global warming will make things hotter in 20 years...
I’m just curious —
You get two inches of snow, Atlanta — just what did you expect the governor or mayor or anybody to do for you — hold your hand???
Grow up —
My theory that the media and Team Obama are working, sometimes with unwitting Republicans, to DESTROY the “brand” of the only electable party that is capable of representing conservative ideas.
I am not saying they only attack conservatives, but that they only attack Republicans...in an effort to taint ALL Republicans.
Christie MAY have caused a traffic jam. Media hoopla, federal investigation.
Trey Radel admits to MISDEMEANOR, repents, gets treatment, is PUSHED out by the party.
Michael Grimm gets irritated with liberal reporter, speaks mean words to him, media goes nuts.
Nathan Deal talks about less than stellar forecasts, suddenly HE is to blame for Atlanta’s transit problems.
There are Democrat parallels here, but let us just deal with the latest. Anyone remember the media attacking Kathleen Blanco, governor of Louisiana, for her FAILURE to save lives during Hurricane Katrina? Nope. In that case, it was the Republican PRESIDENT who was to blame.
Yep. I was supposed to fly out of ATL Tuesday - on my way to RDU - and Delta cancelled all flights to RDU ON MONDAY.
In fairness to the guvna, For DAYS the weather dudes and dudettes had been saying this storm would only matter south of I-20 (bisects Atlanta). But then by about 6 AM Tuesday AM, they were ALL changing their tune to issue the OH CRAP alerts. Here in GA they make the school closings call prior to 6 AM.
So yeah, they waited too long to make the “go home/ stay home” call, but the real issue is that ATLANTA METRO *still* doesn’t have a plan or the capacity to clear roads. PERIOD.
Just wondering if the huge International Production & Processing Expo. downtown which began on Monday, had anything to do with the Mayor making light of the incoming storm?
It's an unending cycle. People criticize if governments take precautions and nothing happens. They complain if they don't plan for possibilities and they happen.
I thought the mayor of Atlanta nailed it. People should've been let out of work on staggered schedules, with government employees leaving last.
Uncle Chip.... you come on down here and drive on the layer of ice that is under the 2 inches of snow. Then and ONLY then can you have the privilege of uttering such nonsense as “Grow Up.”
Uncle — it was more complicated than just 2 inches of snow. (I grew up in upstate NY and moved south in ‘73)
When the precip started we were above freezing. (about 6 AM for snowfall start) but by 1-3 PM, depending on where you were we were in the mid twenties, and finished the afternoon early evening in the teens during the heaviest snowfall.
The snow that fell first made the roads wet. It froze in place, then snow fell on top and got packed down.
The ISSUE is that our DOT and the City of Atlanta don’t have a workable plan to get the roads cleared when traffic is heavy with commuters. They didn’t act soon enough, and they lacked the clearing capacity no matter what.
The residents aren’t whining. It was bad for folks trying to get home from downtown ATL.
We live in the distant NE suburbs and are well-prepared for this sort of thing. The ITP folks (inside the perimeter) not at all.
Okay, he had one day warning. What is he gonna do, get snow plows down from Ohio? Have a special edition of Top Gear to teach sunbelters how to drive in snow?
Even when Atlanta gets its once a decade two inches of snow, it doesn’t stay long. Since when do modest snowfalls get their own name, anyway?
We here in Wisconsin had -26 degrees earlier this week, without that windchill factor or anything. My windshield fluid and anti-freeze froze. The BUick didn’t start, thankfully that V-8 Chevy started up (but had to warm up for 30 MINUTES to defrost the anti-freeze.
I know you folks aren’t geared for it, but good grief!
Then stay home and wait for it to warm up and melt.
I agree. My point is the continuing smear of Republicans in the media.
Gov dufus was more worried about appearances than results as are most gov entities...
They should have closed all the schools and state offices based on the fact that the weather forecast that was ALL OVER THE PLACE!
Then, private businesses and individuals could have made their own decisions...
Fact is, the Nat Weather Service DID call for the worse weather to the south of Atlanta, so the Governor rightfully delayed deploying the State's limited snow gear until it was certain where the storm would do the most damage. That wasn't certain until around noon on Tuesday. The interstate backups were due to the usual snow panic where everyone tries to leave work or school at the same time.
Deal is getting a raw "deal" on this call.
what b.s.
The govt motto in 2014 is do nothing and create a dependency situation, everywhere govt rules.
So you’re saying 1.5 million people leaving at roughly the same time had no impact???
