For an longtime Kansas Republican in trouble, there's no place like home.
Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., is facing a Tea Party primary challenge to his reelection this year from Dr. Milton Wolf -- a distant cousin of President Barack Obama.
Roberts was first elected to Congress in 1980, and was elected to the Senate in 1996. Now, though, the New York Times reports he's struggling to renew ties to the state as he battles to keep his job.
Roberts doesn't live in Kansas; instead, when he's there, he stays at the country club home of Phyllis and Cecil Ross, who have donated to his campaigns in the past. He lists their address on his voter registration.
The Times quotes Roberts as joking: "I have full access to the recliner."
Roberts does own property in Dodge City, Kan., and pays property taxes on it -- but he rents it out to tenants. He and his wife live in Alexandria, Va.
"He owns a residence in Dodge City, Kansas, that currently has tenants so he also rents a place to stay in Dodge City, Kansas, when he travels there," spokeswoman Sarah Little said Friday.
Little confirmed that Roberts pays rent from the donor couple, who own a home on Club View Drive in Dodge City.
Of the Times' piece, she said: "The story is misleading and ridiculous."
In a separate memo to media, Little called the New York Times report a "hit piece."
"The story is so slanted and so far from the truth that Kansans will not take it seriously," she said. "They know better."
Ditch RINOs.
Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin doesn’t have a home in Iowa either.
Support Dr. Milton Wolf to oust Pat Roberts in KS
Oh, this is SWEET news. Wow, I love it. Kansas deserve someone from their own home state and not someone who is the BELTWAY culture corrupt culture
Replace him now. That’s without excuse.
Hey, he’s a politician. Who cares, as long as he has a long and prosperous career. It worked for McConnell and Boehner didn’t it?!
Most Hoosiers didn’t follow Lugars Senate record like some of us, but the residence thing definitely played a huge part in his loss.
And it damned well should matter.
Wonder if there is a state in which he claims his homeowners exemption for real property taxes.... what a dumbo....
First of all, WTF is the New York Times doing in Kansas?! Stay in New York, you sleazebags!;) Secondly a cousin of Obama’s is in the Tea Party. Hehehehehe ;)
“Don’t know if this will cost Roberts his seat in the end but it can’t help. “
Well, I hope it does. If he runs again, He will be in his mid-80’s when his next term is up and he’s been their 14 years already. Time to ship him out. He personifies what’s wrong with the Congress.
“Secondly a cousin of Obamas is in the Tea Party. “
Yeah, there’s a “woodpile” there somewhere!
As a Kansan, I say adios Pat. Although he does always vote correctly.
Ron Wyden (D-OR) lives in New York. He visits Oregon every now and then.
This is not a trivial issue, nor should it be. It cost Chip Cravaack his house seat.
He was an excellent conservative republican. But, a few weeks after he was elected his family packed up their house in the Mn 8th district and moved to New Hampshire.
I am convinced that cost him the next election.
The Kansas primary is in August. We can pound this till then and build momentum!
I assume there are many professional politicians in DC with no roots in their district/state and therefore, the constitution. This is a federal republic, not a banana republic.
Stupid story.
You can claim residency wherever you want.
I have friends who own several homes around the country and rent other homes fairly regularly.
They call home where they highly feel is home for them.
No different than when I lived on the east coast. I still had my home in California and where I was living was never intended as permanent and I regularly traveled back to CA.
No different than many execs who have homes in another state and spend time renting various places.
Yawn....
