Theater calls cops on diabetic man for bringing in strawberries

That’s bananas!

A Brooklyn movie house in health-food-centric Park Slope called the cops on a diabetic customer — just because he was munching strawberries that were sold outside the cinema.

“It was embarrassing. I didn’t expect it. Two police officers came and told me to leave with a full theater of people watching. I said ‘Is this for real?’ and they said, ‘Yes, you have to leave,’ ” said Michael Kass, a 41-year-old financial analyst.

Kass, who has Type 2 diabetes, couldn’t eat the junk food for sale at the Park Slope Pavilion, so he brought a carton of prewashed strawberries to keep his insulin level in check during a showing of “Divergent” on Sunday, he said.

But before he could watch the action flick, a worker cut him off near the theater entrance and checked his bag — demanding he toss the forbidden fruit and explaining no outside food is allowed, Kass claims.

The strawberry-stashing father of three tried to explain his disease, but “they didn’t seem to care,” he said, so he asked a manager to refund his $12 ticket.

When the manager refused, he stuffed his snack back in the bag and took a seat in the theater, he said.

It’s the theatre’s right to decide what goes on in its establishment.

And why I refuse to go to the theaters any more. I have similar eating issues.

Well, yes, and anyone has the right to be an asshole, i.e the theater manager.

if he has type 2 and doesn’t use insulin, he has no medical need to eat to raise his glucose, so somethings fishy.

I think it’d be fun to argue the theatres have an obligation to provide diabetic-friendly snacks in addition to junk food. they are promoting the act of eating during their movies by having a refreshment stand in the first place so where’s the ADA compliance if no outside food is allowed?

Type 2 on drugs can have ups and down in blood glucose just like type 1. You always carry food.

I’m not taking sides, but... since he’s a man, I guess Kass hasn’t ever realized the old mom’s trick of stuffing baggies full of treats in your purse.

Good Grief. I remember back in the 70’s you brought a bag of rice to the movies. For the wedding of course. LOL.

Most theatres will generally offer a refund, if you ask for one within a few minutes of a movie starting.

However, the movie wasn’t the reason why the guy wanted a refund.

But isn't that how we the 99% always react after the 10% have have coerced an operation to put in healthy food?

I rarely go to the movies....but I did recently ...and carried a contraband *large* box of Junior Mints jammed into my jacket pocket b/c I’m too cheap to pay $15. for one at the concession.

It was so funny ...I couldn’t get it out of my pocket, the way it was jammed in there! LOL I was squirming to *set it free* w/out drawing attention to myself.

I predict full body scans at the ticket taking area....coming soon.
