I think it was black on black. Not that this justifies it, but I guess the thugs picked the wrong target. Ooops.
The owner shouldn’t have pursued them because from a legal point of view, this makes him subject to a serious level of felony. But when the press says “Mercedes,” it’s not a recent model, judging by the pics, and the owner may have been somebody who acquired it quite legitimately by working for it and was really mad when the thugs tried to take it away from him. Sometimes a person just can’t take it anymore, and the courts and the cops (especially under DeBlasio) are way too lenient with black on black crimes and he knew he’d never see the car again, so he probably just lost it.
Hope the courts are sympathetic now!
And if they freely sold drugs in the drug store again he would have had a respectable job!

In this case the context is two perps running away from a potential crime victim who is not a cop.
In the Comments, there is a high level of sympathy and a moderate level of support for the non-cop shooter.
There are no outraged Comments at all that condemn his decision to kill the two perps, and no Comments at all that demand he be severely punished.
Now, imagine if the shooter had been an off duty cop.
There would be dozens of Comments here screaming for the cop's head on the end of a stick.
