And I have traced MY family back to the SLAVS. Although the term looks to be related to “slave,” depending on your source, it either means “glory” or “worshipper.”

Slav, meaning “glory” or “worshipper" was what they called themselves.

These people were raided for slaves for a thousand years by the Germans, Magyars, Bulgars, Greeks, Norse, Tatars, Turks and others. As a consequence, the word in most European languages for a person held in chattel servitude became "slave" or something close to that.

IOW, "slave" comes from "Slav," not the other way around.

How much do I owe?

My great great grandfather fought for the Union army during the war and my great grand fathers family had not yet made it to this country. Someone must explain how and to whom I owe reparations.

“•Theodore Gilmore Bilbo was an American politician. Bilbo, a Democrat, twice served as governor of Mississippi and later was elected a U.S. Senator.”

An excellent point. The Ku Klux Klan was the militant arm of the Democrat party, & Democrat policies (both in the south & currently) have continued to rob Blacks of freedom & opportunity. I suggest the DNC pay reparations.

Friday, January 20, 2017. Reparations end.

Inauguration Day. A new president is sworn into office.

Reparations end. Just like Reconstruction ended. Just like Jim Crow laws ended. And just like the Civil Rights Act draws to a close. As well as The Great Society, and The New Deal.

Hopefully the end of Progressivism altogether. If medical science can find a cure for their brain sickness.

“You and I know what’s the best way to keep the nigger from voting,” blustered Theodore Bilbo, a Mississippi DEMOCRAT senator

...there I fixed it.

The Northwest Ordinance applied only to the territory north of the Ohio River. Prohibiting slavery there meant that when the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin were formed, they became free states. But many of the initial settlers were from the South--in Illinois it was a fairly close call (like a 4-3 ratio) whether it would be a free or slave state.

Jefferson had proposed banning slavery from all of the territories but that wasn't adopted. In any case Alabama and Mississippi were settled by Southerners so it's hard to see how slavery could have been excluded.

American blacks, other than first-generation immigrants from Africa, or people whose parents were both born in Africa, would not be alive if not for the misfortune that happened to their distant ancestors. If those ancestors had remained free in Africa they would have had children by other people from their same village and would have a different set of descendants alive today. The slaves in the US had children by slaves whose ancestors were from different parts of Africa, whom they would never have met if they had remained in Africa. Each person is the product of a particular combination of matings between all of his or her ancestors--remove any person from that pedigree and none of the descendants would ever have been conceived. If any one of your ancestors from 500 or 1000 years ago had died in childhood, you wouldn't be here now.

My taxes go to pay for Tafeefa’s Big Mac and fries.

That's the extent of my liability for these “crimes.”

Paid, over and done.

And I am so white I look like a ghost.
I am also about 1/16th Cherokee

I had ancestors on both sides of the Civil War.
And my Cherokee ancestors didn’t do so well on the Trail of Tears.
PS
I put all that behind me a long time ago!
Like when I was about 5 or 6 and could half way understand it all....

We, the Union side gave already. We lost 75 combat dead a day for FOUR YEARS straight! Each and every day our northern families got the awful letters telling them their son or husband was killed fighting the Democrats who ran the plantations in the south to set Black people free. That doesn’t count those who died of any other cause! Some small towns (Deer Isle Maine) didn’t ever exist after the Civil War because all of the men were killed fighting for Black people. We poured our blood out for the freedom of Black people. My advice to them is to sue the Democrat National Committee for reparations.

I know from personal experience that what’s being described as having been done to the black sharecroppers was also done to the white sharecroppers. It was the banks that did it.

So to correct the injustices of the past, take money from people who didn’t commit the injustices and give it to people who were not victims of the injustices?

The author makes a valid point about the power of the State. Which is lost in the discussion, simply because of the title and subject. The point being, that a state can limit the speech and freedoms of certain groups and peoples, which can harm future generations.
