Funeral today for 9-year-old girl waiting on medical marijuana

WEST SENECA, N.Y. -- Friends, family and community members crowded into a church in West Seneca Wednesday morning to say final farewells to a little girl whose story touched all of Western New York.

For more than 8 months, 2 On Your Side has been following the journey of 9-year-old Anna Conte.

Anna had Dravet Syndrome, which caused her to have uncontrollable seizures.

Anna and her family were relentless in pressuring state leaders to pass a medical marijuana program, because a special oil-based version of cannabis worked wonders for kids in other states where it was legal.

Finally, the state legislature passed a bill and Governor Andrew Cuomo signed it into law. However, at the governor's insistence, the State Health Department has 18 months or longer to get the program up and running.

That proved to be too long for little Anna. Earlier this month, a seizure put her in a coma, and she never recovered.

A fund has been set up in Anna's memory. You can donate to the "For the Love of Anna Needs Fund" at any M&T Bank branch in WNY.

The Conte's and other families continue to press the state to expedite access for medical marijuana for children who need it.

Christine Emerson's little girl Julia also has Dravet Syndrome. They were at Anna's funeral.

"The service was beautiful, and it was a great representation of who Anna was," Christine said. "Just full of life."

Christine has a simple message to Governor Cuomo.

"Flat out, it's just not good enough," Christine said. "It's not good enough, and if this were his loved one, I'm pretty sure that he would make a different decision. Our kids deserve better."

Children using the CDB extract go from hundreds of grand mal seizures a week down to a few, if any.

Sad for the kid and parents, but if they were waiting on the government to come to their rescue, they took the wrong route.

I think it is a shame they are using this little girl’s memory as an advertisement for pot.

Cuomo sandbagged them with the 18-month delay stipulation when he signed the bill into law on July 1st. They thought it would be available by now.

I live in Rochester and never heard of this - and - if the "cure" worked wonders, and was available in other states, I'd have taken my kid to the closest one a loooong time ago.
How long before the family sues NY state?

i don’t smoke week so: 1) is it impossible to find this oil in other substances?? 2) if it was that desperate a need and the situation could have averted death, why didn’t one of the parents find someone who smokes weed and buy some joints??

not being sarcastic- i don’t know the answers...

I was wondering the same thing. Over the last few years, my daughter has had various health issues, and we’ve gone pretty far afield trying to get answers. Most recently, we went to Cleveland, OH, where a Dr. Milstein restored her voice. She lost it 3 years ago, and went through therapy and extensive testing, only to be told it was “stress-induced” and sent to a psychologist. Psychologist said, no, not stress induced. Within ONE HOUR, Dr. Milstein had her singing and talking again.

how many people died due to fast and furious?

how many died on the trek from central America?

how many died in Benghazi?

how many died due to liberal abortion policies?

how many have died due to drugs being freely available?

how many....

does ANYONE think it’s difficult to find weed in this country, legal or not?

they could have just moved to a different state where it already WAS legal?

Were it my kid, and were that treatment available elsewhere, and had it proven effective, I'd have found a way to get there.

Yes. A grow shop here in Denver developed a strain especially for this, and it works wonders. It has so little THC it won’t get a fly high but it does prevent the siezures.

How many families pack up and head to the Mayo Clinic or a St Jude's or Shriner's Children's hospital with their sick loved ones?

Our next door neighbor in Belize came all the way to the Cleveland Clinic for a heart valve replacement.

Travel for medical treatment and "medical tourism" have been common for some time now even when it must be subsidized by generous donors.

Conversing with a drug warrior is exactly like conversing with a gun banner. Both shed facts like a duck sheds water. That is what happens when blaming a chunk of metal or bag of plant matter instead of actions of people.

This is their Jihad, a Holy war against a herb.

actually, I’m pretty sure the ‘holy war’ isn’t against the weed... but against the use if the weed. this would be similar to being against shooting random people

and yes, anyone pro-pot is obviously a stoner

Then why didn’t these lazy SOBs go to Colorado where it is legal and get some instead of sitting on their butts and complaining while letting their daughter die???

(I don’t believe for a second that pot oil would have saved their daughter)
