I have heard the same question from time to time. This answer seems to be more detailed than many might like, but it certainly is thorough for someone writing "on the fly".

The question itself is new-age idiocy.

I suspect once Common Core becomes standard, the Founding Fathers will be “Slaveholders who didn’t want to pay their taxes.”

Romans 13 is written in the context of legitimate government, specifically one that rewards the righteous and punishes the wicked.

As was stated specifically in the Declaration, the gov’t of King George was destructive to those ends of legitimate gov’t and it became the right and the duty of Christian men to throw it off and establish a legitimate authority as biblically defined.

We’re in the same situation today.

I figure "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's" doesn't preclude Caesar being due an ass kicking.

But that's just MHO.

I guess I’m an idiot — I have had the same question these past few years. Glad to find a response.

Presbyterian is the operative word here, as the American Revolution was a Calvinist/Presbyterian project. The 13 colonies were founded and/or dominated by non-conformist Reformation sects, who a century before had murdered their annointed king. Their ecclesial preoccupations with self-sufficiency and independence heavily colored their political views and continue to trouble us to this day. Anglo America is liberal in its DNA, as are most members of this forum as soon as they scratch the surface.

It is important for you to re-read the Declaration of Independence, which after this email I suspect you will see through new eyes. You will find that, though it never references Romans 13, the entire document is a justification of independence, to people who knew Romans 13 well, in terms of the king having broken covenant with his subjects. And it is that last bit to which I’m seeking to draw your attention.

This is essentially the answer I tend to rely upon when told we must obey the federal government blindly....I appeal to THE REAL LAW. In our land, the federal bureaucracy is not the Law. The CONSTITUTION is the law.

Were the Founding Fathers in sin when they rebelled against King George?

I would hope that our Founding Father's didn't waste any time worrying about the answer to this.

Actually, the Roman government at the time of Paul writing this letter may have been pretty brutal to Christians who would not say “Caesar is Lord.”

Nero covered Christians in tar and set them afire to light his gardens.

No ... as a newly elected member of my local school board, I have begun a not so subtle campaign to get the history teachers to teach current world affairs.

gummint school kids are coddled through school in America.

Why do you think kids put on belts and blow themselves up?
They're taught to do it and do it with honor or some such bullshit.

OUR kids have band practice and field trips to Washington DC and the Smithsonian ... but are never REALLY taught the gravity of how our nation came to be and what THEIR duties/responsibilities are as citizens.

I know what I'm talking about ... I was a fairly intelligent, somewhat informed person for more than 40 years before it dawned on me ... DAMN! ... no WONDER we in FR go nowhere on a greater social level ... no one but us are actually reading truth !

Good article. It seems to me that we have too many lawyers(in & out of the administration) interpreting our Constitution these days,& doing it purposefully in a manner which many or most of us can’t readily understand. They seem to work this in such a way that keeps our country divided rather than united.

The British were increasingly oppressive and weren’t following their own rules.

That’s good enough for me.
