Cop Hits Man in the Head 20 Times as Onlookers Plead 'Don't Punch Him No More'

Once the cops have pinned a non-violent suspect to the ground, how many times are they allowed to punch him in the head? Is it fewer than 20? I would say so, but I'm not a Greenville County, South Carolina, deputy.

Greenville officers approached a man at a Walmart parking lot on Saturday. The man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and didn't respond to police questions or instructions. Eventually, the officers followed the man inside the store, where they attempted to detain him. The deputies claim the man resisted, though video footage of the incident certainly makes said resistance look passive, rather than violent. But once the two cops had the man on the ground, one of them immediately began punching him in the head. I count at least 20 blows.

Onlookers were horrified, and begged the deputies to stop. Many thought the treatment of the man was cruel, according to WSPA.com. "Please don't punch him like that, don't punch him no more," said one witness. (More video footage can be seen here.)

The man was eventually tasered and then taken to the hospital. Police have not given his name or explained what the charges against him are. The department is reviewing the footage, however, to determine whether the deputy acted properly when he punched a helpless man in the head over and over and over again.

I'd settle for cutting all major PD budgets 30%. Stuff will get right. Quick.

>> Budget reductions until this stuff stops happening.

Agreed, but I’d go further.

No pensions, no bennies, no special immunity, high intellectual standards, and high pay — the best, accountable professionals. And fewer would be required.

I didn’t feel the blow / was it a knock out cold punch or those repeated fast soft punches. I am sure the officer will be under investigation. The man got up and walked away.

Imagine what they want to do to me, running around mouthing off about reducing PD budgets overall... and lobbying my legislators for that.

Of course, I have a meat-eating lawyer on speed-dial (thanks, ex-wives), so I'm not low-hanging fruit.

I think you may have inadvertently hit on the crux of the problem. The cop in question is undoubtedly highly educated and speaks (and only associates with people who also speak) perfect English.

He was confused by the vernacular double negative - 'Don't Punch Him No More' - and thought he was complying with the wishes of the crowd for stricter measures.

(Do I really need to tag this as sarcasm?)

I thought that he was trying to destroy evidence by eating some drugs, and they were trying to prevent it.

One cop seemed to be trying to pry something from his hand, while the other one was trying to subdue him (well, distract him at least) with lame punches. The suspect was kind of a giant - more than a head taller than any of the cops.

Somehow I knew we were kindred spirits.

> I think they can throw as many punches as they want, as long as they keep saying “stop resisting!”

I know it’s not supposed to be funny but that was funny. Anyone else watching the footage get the feeling it was staged? The cop either hits like a wuss or was faking it IMO. I almost expect John Kenyones to walk around the corner with film crews in tow any second. If it was real those cops should never carry a badge again....

The man got up and walked away.

I walked away from an incident that cost me a spleen and my left kidney, took 17 units of blood, and 2 weeks in trauma care/ICU to fix.

Adrenaline can keep you going.

For a bit.

>> their bosses who have built this mess

Yup. The policy, written or implied, is not working.

Not every LEO is a reckless thug — but it’s the punks that make the news while the good guys often go unnoticed behind the scenes.

Well I would say the charges are pretty obvious the way the guy was assaulting the cops fist with his head!

No chance of getting it right, with “police unions” in play.

Cut the budget 30% and you will get 60% more of the same stuff you now detest as “not right”.

I’m for a targeted purge for all government agencies with even a scent of corruption. How do we make sure the corrupted officials are purged?

You tell me who you would trust to carry that out.
