"Reunification with Spain Movement" Established in Puerto Rico

(English-language translation)

San Juan, Sept. 1 - Starting today, the Puerto Rico Reunification with Spain Movement (MRE) is an officially-constituted group after its first assembly was attended by less than 40 people whose common interest is to make the Caribbean island a Spanish province.

"Reunificationists, 116 years ago, the Spanish province of Puerto Rico was invaded and militarily occupied by the United States, causing the separation from the mother country Spain against its will," said José Nieves, the driving force behind this initiative, during the assembly held on Sunday during the long weekend in Puerto Rico and the United States in observance of Labor Day.

As the organization stated today, Nieves defended [the argument] in the founding speech that the "fateful" Treaty of Paris of 1898 "is illegal because there was no representation from the autonomic government of Puerto Rico."

Since then, in his opinion, there have been 116 years of "Americanization" of Puerto Rico, which is currently under a U.S. Commonwealth status, and "historical distortion so we may forget our past."

However, he celebrated those attempts' "having failed, because we are still Puerto Ricans and we still speak Spanish."

"We will not rest until the people of Puerto Rico know their true history and we become the eighteenth autonomous community within the Kingdom of Spain," added the founder of a movement that was born through Facebook, where it now enjoys over 10,700 "Likes".

In concluding a speech in which the cry "Spanish Puerto Rico!" was heard and a debate ensued over what steps must be taken to meet the organization's objectives and what interest the annexation of Puerto Rico may have for Spain, Nieves pointed out: "Mother Spain, open your arms, that your son Puerto Rico will return home!"

I can support this! Especially is all the PRs automatically lose US citizenship, whether they live in PR or NYC.

Can’t think of a downside. Maybe they’ll take parts of NY too.

Let Spain have it. Just make sure that Geraldo Rivera goes with it.

LOL. WTF is the constituency for this, other than Americans tired of Puerto Rico being a net drain on tax dollars? Seriously. Spain was an empire. Puerto Rico was its colony. The Spanish military was brutal to Puerto Ricans when it controlled the island. Independence, I can see, but joining Spain is laughable.

Pretty sure more Puerto Ricans would rather be part of the United States than part of Spain. They are avoiding becoming a US state so they can avoid taxes. Imagine the taxes a country like Spain would put on them.
