Here's What the Owner of the Oldest Operating McDonald's Has to Say About Minimum Wage
The Wire ^ | September 4, 2014 | Adam Chandler

Sixty-one years ago last month, the third-ever McDonald's opened in Downey, Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles and home to Apollo, the third-ever NASA manned spaceflight program. McDonald's went to 119 countries from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Apollo went to the moon.

A man who witnessed much of this history is Ron Piazza, who owns the landmark McDonald's in Downey —the world's oldest-operating McDonald's— along with nine other golden-arched franchises in the area.

Piazza is something of a throwback. Plainspoken and serious, he is the type of business owner whose name and phone number are printed at the bottom of all the customer receipts...

"I started at a dollar an hour. Poverty is as severe as it was when I was making a dollar an hour. The minimum wage increase, frankly, hasn't reduced our poverty problem.

Do I think it’s fair that people live in poverty? Of course not. But I don’t know how you can say that business is responsible for that."

As a good student learning job most still live at home. Most of their parents support them while they learn the ropes of being first employed. King Obama has killed the job market so the fast food and simular places have been flooded with wage earners that support familes. The problem is not minimum wage but a failed economy.

I read the story on AP about the guy who worked for McDonalds for 22 years and only makes 8.25 per hour. Minimum wage.

A couple of things struck me.

Wow, the AP found someone who actually works at McDonalds and not a hired good from SEIU.

Wow, some guy has literally worked his entire career, 22 years at McDonalds, and NEVER obtained any skills, never improved himself in any way, never made manager or assistant manager. But bitches because he can't support his family.

Something is seriously WRONG with the guy if this is true.

Just being a valued employee should have pushed him up the ladder over 22 years. An assistant manager makes 25-35k/yr, plus bonuses. A manager makes >55K/yr, plus bonuses.

Many pull in 6 figures.

Just think of how well this dude could be "supporting a family" had he put in anything but the bare minimum effort.

Under Bush the dimoKKKRATS ridiculed him for the so-called McDonalds type jobs. Now under Obama McDonalds type jobs are mainstream.

"The problem is not minimum wage but a failed economy."

Yeah how come the press NEVER asks Obama about that?

Under his rule, someone expects to work in fast food so they can "support a family"?

. Mr. President, why have you so spectacularly FAILED the American people with the dismal economy?

Do you consider McDonalds a real "career"?

How much do you blame yourself?

“...but the effect will be to make a larger pool of idle people anxious for the money they can make for being part of a mob supporting whatever the next cause the “progressives” need a mob for.”

Yes, they’re fleshing out the mob for when it’s needed. Keep that in mind when planning your ammo purchases.

When I was a kid in the early 60s we used to drive out to Nassau County (I think it was Seaford) to go to a McDonald's that had recently opened. Burgers were 15 cents, cheeseburgers 19 cents.

I have seen a number of people who have long term low wage jobs. That is all they can do. They are not intelligent enough, or mentally healthy enough, or drug clean enough to advance. There is no shame at being a broompusher. That may be all that the broompusher can manage. To expect to earn a wage as a broompusher is unrealistic. It would take at least 2 broompushing wages to support any sort of household.

The minimum wage was never meant to support a family.

Pretty soon, it was a 100,000. Then, one day, the sign said ‘A Million!’.

Reminds e of the Woody Allen movie:

If you contract to work for a progressive liberal, they should not ask “How much are you asking for the job?”, but rather “What do you need to support your family of five and big mortgage?”

The minimum wage was never meant to support a family.

Nor is this minimum wage increase designed to support a family, except those in the Unions who will live off the dues collected.

Hah! Not for nothing and a complete non-sequitor but, Mike Piazza’s dad was my client in the 90’s.

Anyway, could swear the oldest McD’s is in San Jose, on Almaden Road.

Replace them with a machine....

If a buzzer can tell a human being when to turn a hamburger over, surely a machine can be programmed to do the same.

Ditto for fries.

Again for all other fried food.

Considering that Trumpka and Cass Sunstein are footing the bill for this ridiculous street theater.

I find it odd that Unions are scraping the bottom of the barrel to fill slowly emptying and dying lower tier Union ranks.

Those coffers for bloated Union pensions pland aren’t going to fill themselves!

Red is the color of the communist party.

We will know when the GOP is taken over by the true right when their leaders renounce the red color assigned to them by the communists in the press.

The wallpaper at GOP.com is STILL red, and the idiots running the RNC STILL don’t have a clue.

The country clubbers need to be purged
