Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has begun to have serious conversations with state officials and local powerbrokers about running for a sixth term in the Senate.
The longtime Republican senator is expected to face a tougher challenger and would be a major target for Tea Party groups given his support for a Senate immigration bill granting a path to citizenship for undocumented workers.
And McCain, who turned 78 last month, has at times suggested hes willing to hang it up, telling the entertainment website The Wrap earlier this year that he didnt want to be one of these old guys that shouldve shoved off. But more recently, McCain has given every indication that he wants to stay in the upper chamber, even after three decades as a senator.
Im leaning toward it, McCain told The Hill when asked about running for re-election.
Im doing all the things necessary to do so, McCain says of a reelection bid. A good fundraising quarter. A lot of meetings and talking to a lot of people in the state, the usual preparations in the state.
The 2008 GOP presidential candidate met Friday in Phoenix with key supporters to plan his re-election race, a McCain aide said.
And McCain says whether Republicans win a Senate majority in November wont particularly make a difference in his decision.
McCain faced a primary challenger in 2010, just two years after Barack Obama defeated him for the White House.
He easily fought off former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, defeating him by 25 points after pouring $25 million into the face.

I got an invite to go and meet the ole codger next week...as he is campaigning for Wehby in Oregon...but alas I have toenail cleaning to do.
We probably have about 18 months to go before McAmnesty dusts off his “Just Build the Danged Fence” signs out.
Will the doddering class/low information crowd fall for it yet again? (Cue up Lucy pulling the football.)
As an AZ resident, I can tell you that the influx of ‘moderate’ republicans and whatever Dems ran from Cali taxes (that know John is one of them now,) combined with the illegals, have shifted this state massively in the past few years.
And then you have the idiots who believe that McCain is better than any democrat even though he spends most of his time supporting their causes.
AZ isn’t long for the world as an actual red state. JM, Brewer and their lesser ‘Republicrat’ clones may keep the letter ‘R’ in high office but their actions are 100% Democrat where it counts.
Ugh!
“Who keeps voting for these senile RINOs?”
Two people. Idiots and people who believe that you can’t
teach the GOP a lesson by voting these RINO’s out.
Glue factory. Good one.
But I thought that was for horses not jackasses.
a politician who doesn't die in office?
Retire? He’ll never retire and if he dies Lindsey Graham and McCains daughter will wheel him around like in the Weekend at Bernie’s movie.
Please AZ, dump this turd.
I will never understand why Sarah Plain does not move into her Maricopa county home and run against McCain.
I’m going to do something very out of character for me, and actually contribute money to whoever challenges him. McCain needs to be defeated.
Glue standards vary. There’s gorilla glue, and I’m guessing jackass glue.
There’s got to be SOME use SOMEWHERE for this feckless moron.
Because it's not about the money at this point, it's all about power.
Quit, McQueeg, and take your mini-me, Flake, with you.
I know I am. This is insane. Why? He is horrible. The only way McCain is getting reelected is 1. Democrats are voting for him and 2 voter fraud.
McCain voted conservative in 2009 and 2010 on some issues.
He hasn’t done so this time around. He worked with Bob Corker and Harry Reid this time around.
I think Gosar should be the one to run. He is moderate but better on immigration than the others in the delegation.
