The FBI director on Thursday criticized the decision by Apple and Google to encrypt smartphones data so it can be inaccessible to law enforcement, even with a court order.
James Comey told reporters at FBI headquarters that U.S. officials are in talks with the two companies, which he accused of marketing products that would let people put themselves beyond the law's reach.
Comey cited child-kidnapping and terrorism cases as two examples of situations where quick access by authorities to information on cellphones can save lives. Comey did not cite specific past cases that would have been more difficult for the FBI to investigate under the new policies, which only involve physical access to a suspect's or victim's phone when the owner is unable or unwilling to unlock it for authorities.
"What concerns me about this is companies marketing something expressly to allow people to hold themselves beyond the law," Comey said. At another point, he said he feared a moment when "when people with tears in their eyes look at me and say, 'What do you mean you can't?'"

Translation: what concerns me is that market demand has resulted in some technology that would slow you from being able to assert their 4th Amendment rights (that pesky Constitution, ya know)
I guess today's government also objects to people being able to encrypt email...and people having the right to lock their houses...

You can keep your smart phone, I’m perfectly happy with my “drooling moron” phone. All they would find on it would be text messages to my sister on how to make moms potato salad and pictures of my cats.

I have to wonder if Law enforcement today just want to monitor facebook, look at cameras and cell records, rather than solve crimes. It’s like they don’t know how to investigate crime anymore, hence the complaint.
Only Blackberry offers voice security, either through Blackberry Enterprise server or with a Secusmart chip at both ends. Blackberry bought Secusmart last month. Angela Merkel uses A Blackberry Q10 smartphone with a Secusmart chip to avoid NSA snooping of her voice communications.
You know, this isn't really a partisan thing, or at least it shouldn't be. Everyone knows that if the GOP were in charge they would be saying the exact same thing, and sadly there would be people on FR who would agree with them.

Actually, Apple does, if you use FaceTime voice or visually. It is 128 bit encrypted and Apple does not archive anything, nor can they decrypt the messages being transferred between you and the recipient. Also, iMessage is encrypted the same way. . . and also not archived. They can only be eavesdropped on the old fashioned way. . . someone hanging from the eaves and listening.
Otherwise, you are correct. The voice over cellular is dependent on the security of the carrier. . . as is the messaging.
