The family probably was washing with a bleach solution. The UK Guardian story about the stepdaughter who called the ambulance stated that she took a shower and rinsed with a bleach solution. This is standard protocol in West Africa.

Of course we have the breaking news conference and now it’s “he doesn’t have the typical symptoms” But to err on the side of safety, they get him to the hospital. AND have allowed the Care Now facility to reopen.

We don’t know anything else about the family. They have been skirted away to some double secret probation location, courtesy of an anonymous donor giving them a home. They could all be dead for all we know. Has anyone seen them? Why would these government pricks tell us the truth about anything? I mean just because we pay the bills. How dare us demand truth. All any of them do is stick their lazy finger in the air to see how it will affect their precious leader presidente obola.

“And we have 4000 soldiers in the belly of this beast.
God help them.”

I agree...and us, too, when they return. This is an unholy phuck-up of Biblical proportions. We have no controls over immigration, thus allowing this horrible and incredibly lethal disease to get a foothold on a new continent that has tens of thousands of travelers moving in- and out-bound every day. Only the Hadj in a month or so will be worse for the spread of this disease.

I’ve beeN watching re-runs of The Walking Dead this week. Monday they had the episode from Season 1 at the CDC. The lone surviving doc/researcher said of the zombie virus, “This is our extinction event.” Well, guess what: pure stupidity (or perhaps some criminal/genocidal purpose) is on the verge of making THIS our extinction event - FOR FREAKING REAL, not like some fictional story on TV.

UN. PHUCKING. BELIEVEABLE.

I hope so too. If the primary and some secondary contacts get it then we are all screwed. If not, they will keep bringing more Ebola carriers into the country until some sensible politicians put a stop to it.

What does a sensible politician look like? I am afraid I have never seen one.

There is a guideline that says ebola does not manifest itself in perspiration until it is well underway and symptomatic.

That can explain family members being around someone for days uninfected, but then the most casual of contacts days later by someone else winding up an infection.

A doctor in Nigeria apparently contracted the disease from a patient near death when she never touched the patient other than with a gloved hand, and then only once to check his pulse. But a day or two earlier she had picked up an IV bag he knocked to the floor with an ungloved hand. Other docs/nurses around him much more often, but earlier in the disease progression, did not get infected.

Thanks for those numbers Clean_Sweep.

CDC web site indicates that ebola symptoms may take 20-21 days to appear, the average time for symptoms to appear being 8 to 10 days.

I know this may be considered racist.....but, is it possible that Caucasians are more likely to contract the disease than Africans?

The disease has been in Africa for decades (and probably longer undiscovered)...and around 30% live through it...passing their genetics down to the next generation. This may build a degree of tolerance that Caucasians don’t have.

For the most part, the only Caucasians who ever come in contact with the virus are wearing protective gear (and some still get infected), so we really wouldn’t know about the ability to resist the virus.

Has anyone seen them?

Just pictures of them praying with Jesse Jackson. Unless you believe those were photoshopped.

My wild speculation on genetics can be seen in post 70.

All I know is when Jesse Jackson becomes a families “Spokesperson” they want a big payday..or blame racism..Jesse Jackson is NEVER about himself, always about what he can get for himself..the guy is a pig, so the fact the family has associated themselves with him tells me everything I need to know

Didn’t a large group of Congressmen, including Obama, just recently go to Africa sometime over the summer? Where did they go?

Thank you for this thread. It appears government officials are behind the curve, possibly because they have good reason to believe they are about to be overwhelmed and they need time to make preparations. It is also likely Ebola will be treated in a politically correct manner just as was sexually transmitted HIV.

Ordering deputies into what was clearly a contaminated zone without protection was likely professional negligence. The fact the relatives are quarantined, that most of the contents of the apt have been treated and the fact the doctor who was transported to the medical facility in Atlanta was suited with a biohazard equipment (by people who know WTH they are dealing with) suggests the situation deserved more caution.

Claiming that only symptomatic individuals pose a threat is an irrelevant and distracting half-truth. An infected individual may appear to the untrained eye as asymptomatic and then become symptomatic shortly thereafter.

The media-reported blubber about airline passengers are safe if none have a temperature is such a distraction. What about those who come into contact with, or even near one infected with Ebola at the baggage carousal? Or, for that matter, anyone else in the community?

Does the Dallas Sheriff’s department even have quarenten suits?

If Obama is going to keep our boarders open to every deadly decease all our departments are going to need to get their hands on some and the training to go with it.

serving papers should not require close physical contact

Deputy hands his pen to exposed family members to sign papers, they sign and hand pen back and he then puts into his pocket.

Tough to say about that. Reasonable speculation, ancestral exposure to Malaria has provided at least some immunity to some people of African descent.

But, then there’s Dengue, another hemorrhagic virus. Several strains, four or five, exposure to one provides immunity to the one, but weakens you and makes you more likely to succumb to a different strain.
