Little Girl's Playset Is in Her Own Backyard, City Wants It Destroyed Anyway

CBSLA.comFellow libertarians, we may be observing peak bureaucratic cruelty in Santa Fe Springs, California. City officials told Jessica Torres and Felix Miranda to destroy their backyard playset—a gift to their handicapped 10-year-old daughter from the Make-A-Wish-Foundation—because it is a "public nuisance," according to CBSLA.com.

Young Tiffany suffers from seizures and can't play at the public park, so the Make-A-Wish-Foundation gifted her a personal playground. It sits in her backyard, on Miranda family property. Nevertheless, the city thinks it has the right to force the family to disassemble the playset. When Torres approached a city official, she was treated as courteously as would be expected by anyone else who has ever gone up against the tyranny of local government. According to CBSLA.com:

“When I asked the city, ‘So where do you expect my daughter to play?’ they said ‘Well, the city’s not responsible for your daughter’s disability,'” Torres said. “They said ‘Your Tiffany is not our problem.'”

The city's rationale for ruining a little girl's happiness is that the playground area is cluttered and dangerous. Local reporters called shenanigans on that verdict:

But Torres, who’s an oncology charge nurse at Beverly Hospital in Montebello, showed CBS2/KCAL9 reporter Adrianna Weingold the backyard, front yard and the inside of the family’s home and things looked relatively neat and tidy.

Torres showed Weingold some of the tickets the city’s issued, calling on the family to remove all items from the backyard and front yard, including all playground equipment.

After Weingold approached city officials, they changed their story. Now it's perfectly fine to keep the personal playground up and running, they said—despite what is explicitly printed on the numerous tickets the Mirandas received for hosting unauthorized fun in the privacy of their own backyard.

see you libertarians and you third partiers and you constitutionalists and you perot-idiots....you think you’re so damn smart in foiling a pubs chance thus electing rats every year.....so this kind of statist govt is what you get....enjoy...

Are you sure you're in the right forum? Last I read it wasn't the Glory Glory To The GOP-E Forum. Your outrage and blame is grossly misplaced. Never dealt with city hall & some self anointed Barney Fife Zoning Official have you? This isn't a political issue as such this is an Idiot issue. Someone who is abusing powers and common sense likely appointed to an enforcement position.

I have a news flash for you. GOP Twits in a Home Owners Association or planned communities where Country Club Republicans live and rule can be just as petty on what is allowed and what isn't as DEM. Fir example a restriction may prohibit a ramp and call for steps only. Why you chose to use this thread the way you did defies logic.

Yes. Because the same thing happening with city council members that have an ‘R’ by their name is so much better a form of tyrrany.

There’s only one thing that should be done with idiot public officials of this ilk. Tar & feathers. Two coats, for good measure.

I had the city council vote to condemn my house one day. Just out of the blue I have a note taped to my door telling me the house will be condemned by eminent domain. The reason, after two years of fighting to finally find out, was a new council member was in a canoe club and didn’t like looking at the houses from the river. They wanted to “preserve” the nature. Once those emails were dug up I kept the house. I eventually sold the house and property to a developer and now there is a gigantic house on the river front property where my old dump use to be and those jerks get to look at it all day long.

This story shows the power of the media. It wasn’t until a reporter exposed the situation that the city caved. Now, what if there were no news story? The little girl would have no playground. And we have the Obama administration.

I love a story with a happy ending.

My be party leaders did not have swing set when growing up so it's only right that you do not. For good of peoples party you need to fall in line.

Next time you go into City Hall, make sure you're armed with a camera.

This would play well on the local TV News.

Next best would be to find out where this witch lives and picket her home.

Is it your belief that a California city has a RAT government because of a protest vote by Republicans?

The point has to be made, especially this election, though: GOP-e and RINOs can at least be reasoned with, and occasionally will vote sanely.

What alternate reality are you living in?
That might have been true fifteen or ten years ago, but it isn't now — look at how they throw away slam-dunk positions like icing the ATF, NSA and/or IRS (or even ObamaCare) over their improprieties. But nope, they're just feckless and spend their time moaning and groaning all while their hands help the Democrats push things into place.

The important thing in this election is to stop the Democrats cold. Period. That’s job one.

With the implication that we put Republicans in place? Why? What will they do that will functionally be any different than Democrats?
Now Libertarians or Constitution Party I could imagine being different, Republicans (after their history), not so much.

I wish I hadn’t voted for McCain or Romney so that I could post to you that I didn’t vote for McCain or Romney.

I can empathize — to my eternal shame I voted McCain in 2008, but I promised myself I'd never again hold my nose while voting or vote because the other guy's worse and so when `12 came a long I voted Gary Johnson (a former governor of my home state) — and it feels damn good not to have a vote for Romney on my conscience.

You too can have this amazing experience: refuse to violate your principles when you vote.

No, that was over on this thread, and my response to them got some interesting results.

Oh, I have — it's amazing how many of the lawyer-types stand with/for the government officials, even when what's going on is quite blatantly contrary to the Constitution [federal or state].

The public is not allowed in my backyard.

Several years ago, I was having my property walled in cinderblock...the inspector had the contractor knock off a foot of the front portion.

Reasoning: A six foot wall would make it difficult for the Code Enforcement Nazis to peek into the front yard.

It's STILL true, and even more so today. The only thing that staying home rather than casting a vote for an imperfect Republican has done is GOT MORE DEMOCRATS ELECTED, and those Democrats have turned into the most socialistic, anti-American domestic force we've ever encountered. We simply can't afford to increase their numbers! Even the RINOs were reasonable enough to vote against Obamacare.

It's just a matter of degree. I would rather have a RINO that votes against me 40 percent of the time, than a Democrat in a majority of Democrats who is guaranteed to vote against me 100 percent of the time. They are determined to push through the rest of their "agenda" in these next two years even if they have to do it illegally. It just has to stop, or we're finished.

We can go great guns in '16 on getting the RINOs out, but we may not even get to '16 if we don't stop the insanity in '14. And this IS insanity we've got going here, right now.
