Archaeologists discover one of the earliest-known images of Jesus — and he's beardles

Archaeologists have uncovered one of the earliest-known images of Jesus in the town of Cástulo in Andalusia, Spain. The image, engraved on a glass plate known as a paten, shows a beardless, short-haired Jesus.

The archaeologists estimate the 8.6-inch paten is from the fourth century C.E., and they suspect it was used to hold Eucharistic bread. The image shows Jesus in a philosopher's toga, along with two other — also beardless — male figures, whom researchers suspect are Peter and Paul, two of Jesus' apostles. All three of the men are depicted with halos. "The scene takes place in the celestial orb, framed between two palm trees, which in Christian iconography represent immortality, the afterlife, and heaven, among other things," the archaeologists said in a statement.

The paten is the earliest depiction that has been found in Spain, Discovery News reports, and it is "in an excellent state of preservation," with 81 percent of its original contents restored. The paten is now on display at the Archaeological Museum of Linares. --Meghan DeMaria

> “... so it’s silly to tell Buddhists they should use “AD” when they don’t mean it.”

No one tells Buddhists they should use ‘AD’. Where do you get the idea that anyone is ***told*** they should use BC/AD? No one is told to use BC/AD in contemporary settings.

The present year is 2014 as adopted by convention; that’s what is used. All dates used in government, education, commerce and all sectors use 2014. 2014 AD is not used in contemporary business. The usage of 2014 CE is strange, duplicitous and blatantly revisionist.

Again there is no excuse for those that use BCE/CE. It is obvious they are engaged in a coverup by adopting a sham reference point. They could use the Jewish year with a polite reference to the present year 2014. No one is telling anyone to use BC/AD.

The most recent scholarship shows that the Black Legend is largely a myth, perpetuated by the English Protestants.

According to your religion all non Catholic history is a myth as well as all the forgeries of your religious historical documents...Mythical...

One characteristic of the Shroud that I find especially compelling (I work in 3D illustration/animation) is not only that it's a photographic negative (discovered in the 19th century), but that it's an embedded 3D terrain map. This property was discovered in the 1970s, when NASA scientists fed the image through a terrain analyzer.

I have yet to see it explained why there is no space at the top of the head between the front of the body and the back of the body...

Since the fact the the time the Earth completes one orbit around the sun (we call it a YEAR) is NOT divisible by the time it takes the earth to rotate one time (we call that a day) there is a remainder that accumulates, and every four years that remainder is approximately one day. We add an extra day to the calendar every fours and that year is called a Leap Year.

However, there is STILL a small remainder that keeps on accumulating, and the Georgorian calendar deals with that every 4 centuries.

1 Divide the year for which you are trying to determine a leap year by four. If the year is not divisible by four, it is not a leap year. If the year is divisible by four, continue to step two.

2 Divide the year by 100. If the year is not divisible by 100, it is a leap year. If the year is divisible by 100, proceed to step three.

3 Divide the year by 400. If the year is not divisible by 400, it is not a leap year. If it is divisible by 400, it is a leap year.

(Yes; there is STILL a very small accumulation!)

It’s a fascinating subject.

Sometimes nations “compel” their people to use a common language (or two), or a measurement system (e.g. metric). In the technical community the reason is to create a “national standard” to reduce confusion, streamline communication and speed innovation.

However, sometimes a standard is imposed to encourage/force a culture (Sharia Law).

Calendars fall in between because they are often based on historical cultural events or beliefs.

This example of reshaping the language (renaming BC/AD) is something else. It is a blatant manipulation of the language in an attempt to reshape the culture. Progressives have a long history of doing this:

“Internal Revenue” (revenue? really? it’s stealing)

“Diversity” (how to define? no one has ever proved it’s a good thing)

“Global Warming -> Climate Change” (watch them get away with this)

“Social Justice” (?? what is this? sure sounds good)

“Gun Control” (sounds good. it’s rather important just WHO is doing the controlling)

“Ethnic Cleansing” (an oldie that backfired and was redefined as bad. Isn’t “cleansing” a beautiful way to say “extermination?”)

and so on...

I know some people claim that Jews have so much European blood in them, that they don't represent the ancient Israelites. But have you seen the Lebanese Christians? Essentially these are native Levantines. (Many Palestinians came from throughout the Middle East in various Islamic invasions, including 1948.) Lebanese Christians Danny Thomas, Jamie Farr, Dick Dale, Kasey Kasem, Christa McAuliffe, Tiffany [Darwish], Tony Shaloub, Kathy Najimy, Sammy Hagar, and so on. The Lebanese are so close to the ancient Jews that the Greek (which is Lebanese, not Greek; Greek means they aren't Latin) Melkite Church uses Aramaic in its worship.

And yes, red hair is common among Palestinian semites; in fact, it used to be a Jewish stereotype.

"what the hell is ce."

Why..? Just to mess with us "old folk"... :)

"CE" (Common Era) and "BCE" (Before the Common Era) were abbreviations that began with British Jews in the early 19th Century, and spread to American Jews shortly thereafter. Jews in England and America were participating in public life with their Christian fellow-citizens (unlike in most of Europe, where Jews were often isolated in ghettos), so they needed to use the same dates as everyone else, but they could not in good conscience acknowledge a "Lord" they didn't believe in. Hence "Common Era."
I know.

The usage later spread to historians and archaeologists, especially those working in the Middle East, where they didn't want to offend Jews or Moslems.

Muslims (NOT "Moslems) don't REALLY give a hoot about the usage of B.C. or A.D. and there IS NO hatred of Jesus. He is called "Issa" in their language.
There is/was a California congressmen named Daryll Issa, Daryll Jesus.
Hispanic folks OFTEN name their sons Hay-sus, or Jesus.

The Muslims know all about Issa/Jesus and know that He is the son of Mariam and Yusef and respect Him very much. You will often see things and places named after ISSA.
It's my read that the Jewish Israelis don't care either, as long as they continue to get half of our foreign aid, the latest fighter jets and training of said pilots. As long as they are in control of their land, why WOULD they care about what a bunch of dirty, stinking Muslims think about them? God gave THEM that land and to heck with anyone who would take it away from them.

Israel DOES have a TINY problem getting the Jews of the world to live over there beyond a few months of the year. The pleasant weather in the middle east winters allow them to get AWAY from the cold and snow of the U.S.A. Not ALL of the New Yorkers go to Florida.
For SOME odd reason, Jewish Americans seem to want to stay in America for most of the year. Who can blame them?

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Here's the problem this causes as you and I realize...You can't pick up an old history book withou reading B.C. or A.D..

Just causes confusion.

The same thing with not teaching "writing". These kids can't even read a letter from grandma.

What the heck is wrong with B.C. and A.D. anyway?

Nada. I have a history professor now who said something like, "we got away from B.C. because it's based on the birth of Christ, to B.C.E. Which is based on the birth of Christ."
LOL. Yes, the "common era" IS based on the birth of Jesus Christ. EVERYONE with a brain knows that, but "B.C." REQUIRES saying "Before CHRIST" and the BCE doesn't.
Apparently is DOES matter, especially to those in the media where WORDS are EVERYTHING.

=====================================================

I do have some fun with a little pedantry, though. "Dude, it's '200 BC', but it's NEVER '200 AD'. It's 'AD 200.'"
I don't have many friends...

THAT anomaly is as important as gnat droppings in pepper.

It possibly had something to do with ancient Roman grammar or something.
He was born in the year 200 before Christ.
He was born in the year of Our Lord 200.

Whether anyone likes it or not we measure TIME, that is, HISTORICAL DATES by the birth of Jesus.

That is no small thing. Coincidence? Hmmmmmmm.

Anyone is free to choose whatever calendar system they wish, even a dead one. For example the Mayan calendar purportedly ended in 2011 and if some group was inclined, a new calendar proclaiming 2014 as 3 M.C. could be invented where MC denotes the end of the Mayan calendar.

Nothing bars any group from inventing a new calendar, even the one that masquerades as BCE/CE. But importantly the motives for choosing BCE/CE are not scientific, the motives are political and the intentions are to revise history and bury traditional Christian heritage. That’s the point and that’s what’s wrong with BCE/CE.

And importantly the advent of BCE/CE is not stopping at the water’s edge of archaeology, it is also now in the process of being introduced into public schools.

What is disturbing is that public schools and all of government and commerce post today’s date as October 11, 2014. It is never posted as October 11, 2014 A.D.

The convention is to simply drop BC/AD when posting dates.

Why then is it necessary to commence posting dates in public schools as October 11, 2014 C.E.?

You see the deception?

Current Era, not “Christian Era”. Have to be all things to all peoples, don’t you know?

As I know it, it's COMMON Era, not what you wrote.

Picky, picky, picky.

The PC hall monitors wanted to erase the religious connotation of BC and AD, and replace it with something neutral. Funny thing is, the start of their “Common Era” is what?
Try as they might, they failed.

I THINK the effort failed because NO ONE really cares.

Also, ANYONE with a brain knows that the division of TIME, HISTORICAL dating, that is, is indeed based on the birth of Jesus. THAT was decided when God created us.

It's a

DONE DEAL

So, get over it, pickers of NIT.

4th century Spain was still very much under Roman influence. Thus the philosopher’s robes and shaven. Surprise, surprise. Not.
