Obama's quarantine remarks draw fire from military spouses

... The president's comments sparked immediate criticism online, including from military spouses who said soldiers were also "volunteers" whose time away from family and loved ones was not any less valuable than for civilian volunteers.

"The President's comments on the differences between the quarantine policies for members of the military and civilian volunteers seemed to dismiss the fact that every member of military has, indeed, volunteered to serve," said Rebekah Gleaves Sanderlin, Army wife and board member for the Military Family Advisory Network.

"In pointing out that the civilian volunteers would be sacrificing time away from their families, the President failed to consider that military members also have families and in this, our 13th year of war, most have already sacrificed years away from their homes and the people they love," Gleaves said.

Susan Reynolds, an Air Force spouse and columnist whose husband is based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina and is deploying to Liberia on Saturday with Army soldiers, said she was also offended.

"We are an all-volunteer force. To say that we're not volunteers as well is insulting to us. To say that those healthcare workers' time with their families is more valuable than the time that my husband spends with me and our son — it's very insulting," she said.

Just out of curiosity....because I haven’t heard the whole deployment deal to Africa....do you get hazardous duty pay? If not, why not? And if you pay it....wouldn’t that immediately put the nurse and doctor volunteers into a totally different light?

The military and the civil service-based CDC are having issues with each other and this whole 'who gets quarantined' is one result of that. Both groups are concerned about their reputations, but the military is doing the right thing.

It is really unfortunate that people's reputations are held in greater priority than the health of the American public.

Once again Obama shows his true colors and disdain for America.

Quarantine someone you order into harms way, but refuse to close the borders.
Refuse to order same quarantine for citizens returning or visitors from same countries.

Every democrat should be voted out of office or down, due to this assholes disdain for America and her Armed forces.

They want to ride his coat tails when he was riding high, they should now also pay the price for his treasonous disregard for the citizens of the US and his continuing disdain for the men and women in our Armed forces

Yes, EVERY Democrat SHOULD be voted out, however we have a ton of Freepers who will NOT vote for Republicans because they just aren’t Conservative enough, so they would rather give their vote to a Loosertarian, Independent or even the Democrat or not vote!!!! IDIOCY!!!

“O” should STFU from here on out ... about EVERYTHING!

It’s clear he has absolutely no control over his mouth. He has NO command of the issues and he is clueless about the way politics works.

Did that fornicating son of a female dog illegitimate child really say that??? Where’s the science behind that!!!

It doesn’t surprise me that he thinks that way, or his puppetmaster does, or most of his staff, but isn’t there one person there, a friendly token adviser to say, “uh, Mr. President, I don’t think you ought to say it that way.”

The difference is that Obama despises our military. He denied them the combat zone tax exemption and hazardous duty pay because he hates our soldiers, and he’d rather give that money to illegals than to patriotic Americans. He’s okay with nurses who have an entitlement mentality, but not with soldiers who put their lives on the line for freedom, for a flag, or for an “obsolete” piece of paper.

I see the military quarantine differently.

The quarantine by the Pentagon is to prevent a widespread outbreak among US troops. That would be calamitous for US national security.

The military quarantine is acknowledging the fact that there is some infection risk associated with sending troops to Africa, even though they reportedly will have no direct contact with Ebola victims.

What Obama is saying is that US public at large is not entitled to the same protection from US medical personnel in Africa that have had direct contact, that US military personnel will be given.

Yes, and no. I approve of the military quarantine, but Obama looks at the narrative, not facts; he believes that facts can be shaped to match the desired narrative. The quarantine of all potentially exposed individuals makes sense. The cost of quarantine (21 days in isolation) is not high, and the potential cost of failure to quarantine (Ebola breaking out in the United States) is catastrophic.

Obama doesn’t see things that way and is not trying to protect our military - protecting our troops isn’t even on his priority list. Obama just sees an inconvenience to civilians as unacceptable and an inconvenience to the military as something they deserve. He’s oblivious to risks.
