Mitch McConnell widens lead over Alison Lundergan Grimes in final Bluegrass Poll

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has opened up a five-point lead over Democratic opponent Alison Lundergan Grimes and appears well positioned to win a sixth term, according to the final Bluegrass Poll before Tuesday's election.

McConnell leads Grimes 48 percent to 43 percent in Kentucky's U.S. Senate race, with Libertarian candidate David Patterson pulling 3 percent.

In a Bluegrass Poll released early last week, McConnell was clinging to a one-point lead, with 44 percent backing him and 43 percent choosing Grimes.

The latest poll of 597 likely voters in Kentucky was conducted by SurveyUSA between Oct. 25 and Oct. 29 on behalf of the Herald-Leader and WKYT-TV in Lexington and The Courier-Journal and WHAS-TV in Louisville. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.

With just five days to go until Election Day, McConnell has surged as Republican voters show increasing unity and President Barack Obama's popularity hits a new low in the state.

"The Bluegrass Poll has been the one independent source indicating that Grimes might be on target to win this Senate race, so having the numbers turn against her is devastating news," said Stephen Voss, a political science professor at the University of Kentucky.

Does the poll cover the Clintoid excursions into KY for the “democracy”?

“Obama’s approval rating is 27% in the poll.”

Finally! He’s finally hitting his mark.

I heard some guy on the radio say if polls start breaking towards Republicans in the last week it would be a very positive sign. Here is one.

Can the Republicans get a new Senate leader? This guy is just about worthless in the leadership role.

I can’t recall us every liking the leader...usually for valid reasons...is it the leader, or the caucus that affects what the leader does? Hence why I was so disappointed we could not get rid of Lindsey Graham - changing the caucus would likely change the behavior of the leader, whoever that may be. The more seats gained the less dependent we would be on those like Graham & McCain to keep their votes in line on legislation.

The problem with getting rid of McConnell is that the next in line is Cornyn, and he’s worse. McConnell occasionally goes all out and achieves success. Cornyn doesn’t ever seem to have any fight in him.

I’d love new leadership, but not the ones next in line.

Exactly! Cornyn is a joke. Plus Grimes is young and could potentially stay in the Senate for decades. How much longer is septuagenarian McConnell going to remain there?

It's weird people get on Rand Paul for endorsing McConnell, and give Cruz a pass on endorsing Cornyn.

Of course republicans can get a new Majority Leader. But first they have to win 51 senate seats. Otherwise it will be Harry Reid blocking all good bills passed by the House.

If there were a Senate seat we had to lose, I wouldn’t mind it being this one. I dread the thought of him taking over Harry Reid’s job.

Watch your mouth Bettyprob, as a septuagenarian I intend to be actively around for a long time! :)

McConnell meets the foreign dictator Hussein Baraka's definition of a corpse man.

CRUZ WILL LEAD THE SENATE REGARDLESS.

McConnell needs to FOLLOW THE LEADER.

Do you not dread the thought of Dingy Harry keeping his job?

We need to retake the Senate! What happens next can wait for January.

I love the flier that Republicans put out f Grimes, it’s a hologram that changes from the blue and red poster of Obama to a blue and red picture of Grimes. It must have been expensive.

Too bad. While I wouldn’t want to jeopardize Republican control of the Senate, it would be very satisfying to see McConnell lose. Boehner, too. Nice if they’d join Cantor as former elected officials.

Disappointed Mitch will win.

BS! It won’t accurately reflect what should be until the result is -27%

It's not weird once you factor in the fact that he did not endorse him until after the primary.

But you knew that didn't you Bettyprob?!

We’re going to lose one anyway - Michigan - I’d rather win Michigan and lose McConnell.
