Sen. Mary Landrieu, Bill Cassidy Head To Dec. 6 Runoff in Senate Race

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WDSU) -- Democrat incumbent Sen. Mary Landrieu and Republican opponent Bill Cassidy are headed to a runoff election in the race for the Senate seat.

Landrieu is campaigning on her seniority and record as a job creator and a lawmaker who will put Louisiana first over politics. She remained optimistic despite a letdown on election night.

She said running one-on-one against Cassidy is the race she "always wanted" and challenged him to six debates before the Dec. 6 runoff. Landrieu and her supporters unveiled a new slogan going into the runoff, "Where was Bill?" -- a clear attempt to stack up her experience during some of Louisiana's most trying times.

Cassidy did not make any public appearances on Election Day. Instead, he worked the phone bank to make sure his supporters go to the polls.

The 57-year-old physician spent last few days campaigning on his home turf.

Monday, Cassidy went door-to-door in the neighborhood he grew up in soliciting votes. Over the weekend, he campaigned with the Northshore Tea Party and conservative favorite Dr. Ben Carson.

Cassidy's strategy this campaign season was to frame this Senate race around President Barack Obama. The Cassidy camp has made a large media push to tie Landrieu to Obama, who does not enjoy wide popularity in the state.

Cassidy's message is that Landrieu is out of touch with Louisiana values and in turn voters.

Some have been critical of Cassidy for not participating in many debates this campaign season. However, the Cassidy camp has made inroads with voters. Pollsters say the race is a virtual dead heat with national implications.

Col. Rob Maness (R) didn't survive without enough votes. He was hopeful as last-minute voters head to the polls.

The incumbent has a huge advantage when going up against multiple challengers. If she couldn’t win the first round, she’s probably sunk.

So, will Maness and his supporters pout or will they get on board to defeat Miss Piggy?

The conservatives who voted for Maness because they thought he was the most conservative person in the race will likely support Cassidy.

The people who voted for Maness cause they didn't think Cassidy was a Perfect ConservativeTM and don't like Cassidy's stance on [insert pet issue here] will likely just stay home.

LA’s demographics have changed because of Katrina. A lot of the black, low info voters that made New Orleans such a threat have dispersed.

Its a solidly Red and Republican state now. Compared to 2008, Mary Loser’s challenge is a lot harder.

Which explains why Houston now has a Lesbo mayor.

If we Republicans in Louisiana would have been united in our support for Bill Cassidy then this Mary Landrue would have been already defeated. now one more month of battle remains and watching that arrogant landrue on tv.

The dems are bitter clingers to power, so they will pour EVERYTHING they have into the runoff in order to steal it again for Porgy Mary.

Sometimes Democrats really insult our intelligence with what they say and do.

“Sometimes”?

I don’t know what the black turnout was in La., but if Moochelle can mobilize enough of them with promises of fried chicken then Miss Piggy may be in with a shot, especially if Maness voters don’t show up in force.

You’re probably right. She expected to win outright, but every political pundit around here knew it would be an impossibility.

She thinks WAAAYY too highly of herself!

That’s what I was thinking too.

If her election could help keep a Dem. majority, it would be one thing. But the GOP will control the Senate regardless of what happens in this runoff. I have doubts that the national Democrats care about this runoff at all for that reason.

If the Democrat Party spends one cent on Mary Landrieu on her run-off race with Republican, Bill Cassidy, they are surely insane. She is going to get slaughtered...period!!! She is not only toast........she is burnt toast!!! If she wanted to remain a Senator from LA she should have voted against “Obamacare”. Louisiana, African-American voters, stay away from Landrieu...she is pure Obama poison for you all!!! Louisiana, voters, “ALL”...broom this “Obamabot” butt kisser. Mary Landrieu, big time on December 6, 2014!!!

At one time, I thought if the Dem seat in Louisiana was still on the line, Reed and Obama would hold off on the lame duck amnesty and whatever to get Mary across the finish line. Not anymore.

If we Republicans in Louisiana would have been united in our support for Bill Cassidy then this Mary Landrue would have been already defeated. now one more month of battle remains and watching that arrogant landrue on tv.

I wasn't talking about Republicans. I was talking about conservatives. There is a significant difference, and the GOP has gone out of its way to make sure that we conservatives understand that.

I voted for Cassidy not because of the R behind his name, but because of his message and his record. To be honest, I voted for him in spite of his political party.

Let me explain: I am not a member of any political party, but if I had voted purely on the basis of political party, I probably would have voted for Maness because I generally tend to agree with the Tea Party's conservative ideals. However, I evaluated the candidates and felt that Cassidy, as an individual, best represented me and my ideals, and he was the person I wanted as my elected representative, so I voted for him. It was hard, actually, because I would rather have supported the Tea Party rather than the GOP in general.

So I respect any conservative's right to vote for who they think will best represent their conservative ideals, rather than blindly vote for the candidate of the GOP that, as political party, routinely undermines conservatives and conservative ideals.

I'm sorry, but your "vote for the Republican so I don't have to listen to more campaign ads" argument isn't persuasive.

The GOP is already hailing the national election results as a mandate for "moderate" Republicans and the death knell of conservative movements like the Tea Party. I was glad to see that the Tea Party candidate got as many votes as he did down here. Maybe, just maybe, that will remind a few of those in the liberal leadership of the GOP that conservatism isn't as dead as they would like to believe.

So, is the Louisiana Senate seat still counted in the (after last night) 43(D) seats?

Iow, it will probably be 53(R) and 42(D) after the run-off?

RE: Iow, it will probably be 53(R) and 42(D) after the run-off?

If the Libertarians who spoiled the party by taking 13% of the vote don’t stay home but support the Republican, the answer is YES.
