NEW ORLEANS, LA (WDSU) -- Democrat incumbent Sen. Mary Landrieu and Republican opponent Bill Cassidy are headed to a runoff election in the race for the Senate seat.
Landrieu is campaigning on her seniority and record as a job creator and a lawmaker who will put Louisiana first over politics. She remained optimistic despite a letdown on election night.
She said running one-on-one against Cassidy is the race she "always wanted" and challenged him to six debates before the Dec. 6 runoff. Landrieu and her supporters unveiled a new slogan going into the runoff, "Where was Bill?" -- a clear attempt to stack up her experience during some of Louisiana's most trying times.
Cassidy did not make any public appearances on Election Day. Instead, he worked the phone bank to make sure his supporters go to the polls.
The 57-year-old physician spent last few days campaigning on his home turf.
Monday, Cassidy went door-to-door in the neighborhood he grew up in soliciting votes. Over the weekend, he campaigned with the Northshore Tea Party and conservative favorite Dr. Ben Carson.
Cassidy's strategy this campaign season was to frame this Senate race around President Barack Obama. The Cassidy camp has made a large media push to tie Landrieu to Obama, who does not enjoy wide popularity in the state.
Cassidy's message is that Landrieu is out of touch with Louisiana values and in turn voters.
Some have been critical of Cassidy for not participating in many debates this campaign season. However, the Cassidy camp has made inroads with voters. Pollsters say the race is a virtual dead heat with national implications.
Col. Rob Maness (R) didn't survive without enough votes. He was hopeful as last-minute voters head to the polls.

Between now and December 6 is the time to really pour it on her. No taking a break or time off. Keep plugging away until the day of the runoff!
Get this hag out of the Senate!
I doubt that the Democrats will put much into the elections since the win wouldn’t help them win a majority.
I really doubt that Dems are going to turn out heavily for her.
So, you’re certain that Landrieu’s seat is counted among the (D) seats as of now?
The bad news for her is the Democrats arent going to spend a lot of money to save her seat.
She cant help them hold the majority. Yup, shell be tossed right under the bus.
I don’t see it that way. The RATs have a ton of money and more coming in every day from the usual sources: government unions, silicon valley billionaires, trial lawyers, etc.
They also always think strategically. They know 2016 will be a tough year for the Pubbies so they want to limit their majority so they can win the senate back.
Landrieu also has a history of winning runoffs. She knows how to play the game.
I hope the Pubbies do not sit back on this one.
“I doubt that the Democrats will put much into the elections since the win wouldnt help them win a majority.”
Especially since she polled only 42% against two Republicans. Shes toast. And it’s going to be SO fun to watch her twist in the wind should her money completely dry up. I wonder if she’ll continue to beat the “they won’t re-elect me a fourth time because they’re sexist” drum or if she’ll come up with new and wonderful batsh!t crazy stuff?
they wont re-elect me a fourth time because theyre sexist
Don’t forget that we are racists, too.

Can’t wait to see Babyfat and Cankles on the same stage — talk about a crowded ticket! Soo-eee! Pig!
What’s wrong with waiting? Might slow Obama down as he might not want to sink her chances by pushing the lame ducks while Landrieu has a long shot.
We’re 53 with Alaska. Cassidy will be 54.
Would have been 55 if the GOP pushed harder in Virginia.
Never mind the dimz. Just find me a mailing address for Cassidy. I’ll be sending money. It’s necessary that we bury Miss Babycakes now and forever. She had her chance to support the Keystone and failed.
A lot of the low class/info black voters did leave, but many returned. New Orleans is 60+ % black and I’d say 99% are Landrieu people. Surrounding parish blacks are also her voters. And- don’t forget that there’s been an influx of Seattle-type 20-30 somethings who are uber liberals! If the Maness people turn out Cassidy will win-because no matter the problems they have with him( and I have a few too!) they WILL NOT vote for Queen Mary. No one is switching sides at this point-it will be the Tea Party conservatives who decide her fate. Personally-I wish they would stop all campaign ads for at least 2 weeks. Have mercy on the voters. I’m getting to where I hate BOTH of them equally because of the commercials.
if we were all united in defeating democrats we'd have veto proof majorities in both Houses and the ability to impeach Obama for his lawlessness and his coming executive order giving amnesty to illegals. that kind of thinking cost us the chance for total victory, no amnesty and the jailing of Obama
1 candidate doesn't matter. you have to look at the big picture and the consequences. now with the Republicans controlling both houses and with Ted cruz and Vitter we have a small chance

Mary is in your face. That is why she cant win.
I hope the donors are going broke.
How much money have spent in the south in all these races.
The GOP establishment cant do anything until they get their inside man Cassidy over the line.
They have to keep a promise. The Chamber of Commerce failed Jack Kingston and the Chamber is weaker for it. They cant keep a promise to buy the election. Kingston was an okay candidate as well.
Cassidy and Kingston are better on immigration than Rand or Lamar or Mitch.
The only problem I could see barring a Cassidy win is that Maness backers might go hunting on election day.
