A swarm of hundreds of earthquakes that has been striking a corner of the Nevada desert near the Oregon border for months has intensified in recent days, prompting new warnings from seismologists.
About 750 earthquakes, mostly magnitude 2.0 to 3.0, have struck the area about 50 miles southeast of Lakeview, Ore., since the swarm started in July, said Ian Madin, chief scientist for Oregon's Department of Geology and Mineral Industries.

What? No fracking?
Shhhhhhh! Crap. You weren’t supposed to mention that.
The watermelons won’t shut the hell up about fracking here in Kansas and Oklahoma with the earthquake swarms.
I point out a hundred times more fracking goes on in Texas and North Dakota. Means diddly.
Been watching this on the usgs site.
Interesting
In the 4 corners area of New Mexico gas wells are all over the place. Notice is is a very stable area with NO earthquakes with all that fracking going on for the last 60 years.
Just damn, Bush’s policies come back to haunt us 6 years later...
Wow! Some of the frac lines in Oklahoma have reached Nevada.
They just refuse to admit there are powers higher than they are.
I want a real study on why in the last 2 years a huge swarm of earthquakes has descended on Oklahoma and Kansas. I’m sure the REAL scientific findings would be fascinating.
All they HAVE to do is stick the head out the window.
I used to do that as an instructor who worked out of doors. I would have my sunglasses on. I would look UP.
Water drops on my glasses = rain
NO water drops on my glasses = dry.
I live not far from the Pacific Ocean. I can SEE the weather from north, west and south "a'comin." Using that latter "a'comin" form makes it SERIOUS! :o)
It's not rocket science.
The benefit of an earthquake in this area is it will be a cheap reminder to the rest of us on the Coast to get ready for the Big One.
I have my book cases tied to wall studs but I need to put boards across so the books don’t fall out. Basically I need to rig my house like a ship.
Mother Nature is just loosening up the ground, so that, when the Big One hits California, it won’t take half of Nevada with it.
Who knows if it’s related, but it’s Ok that most are unaware of the geology of this area...and that green stimulus $$ are still funding Nevada Geothermal Power
to continue to drill geothermal wells, which include the vicinity of the Warner Valley Rift Basin, Oregon...just over the border from this swarm...

“Scientists believe groundwater is slowly percolating along the faults and building up pressure, making movement on the faults much easier, said John Vidale, director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network at the University of Washington.”
Personally, I’d be thinking SF is going to crack.
There are lots of natural steam vents in the area and we have a geyser near Lake View.

I would guess this is why water heating in the area was mentioned.
All the Nuclear testing coming home to roost or maybe it was always like this
Yup. We have geothermal activity here as well. As a matter of fact one of the local caino/resorts drilled a geothermal well (in the basement no less) to use to heat the place and provide for heating the water they use too.
My husband and I played EXCELLENT golf together. HE would hit the ball 250 yards (average) or more down the CENTER of the fairway and would be annoyed if he missed the center by a HAIR'S BREATH.
I, on the other hand, hit the ball also down the CENTER of the fairway, but only 120 yards, on a good day. We would both play DOWN the center, together, with me always a bit behind.
I always played MUCH better with him, as I only saw fabulous shots from him. I just did better. When I played with another hacker....dim bulb arose out of my drives, chips AND putts.
Sigh. He's gone now. I haven't played since but I intend to very soon.
.
‘Swarm’ of earthquakes? I’ve heard of swarm of wasps, bees, even mosquitos... who knew?
