Students, teachers and parents were taken by surprise after an active shooter drill brought the Winter Haven middle school into lockdown as armed police officers burst into classrooms with their weapons drawn.
Students at Jewett Middle Academy said they were terrified when police officers burst in the doors for a planned active shooter drill but students and teachers are irked they were not told ahead of time.

We actually thought that someone was going to come in there and kill us, the station quoted her as saying. But police say they conduct these drills for the absolute safety of the students.
These types of drills are vital in order to evaluate not only law enforcement response, but more importantly to educate the students and school officials in case an actual event were to occur, Chief ...Bird said in an email to media.
.... many parents, however, received panicked texts from their children as the drill was going on.

Stacy Ray told WTVT that she received a text from her seventh-grade daughter Lauren Marionneaux after two armed officers burst into her classroom. ... police told The Post that one of the officers had his duty firearm a handgun drawn.
The gun was loaded, as is required. The other officer was carrying an unloaded AR-15. According to Ray, one of her children texted: I thought he was going to shoot me.
In a statement...spokesperson Jamie Brown for the .... police department said they were only aware of one student who texted a parent during the exercise.
Unfortunately, no one gets an advanced notice of real life emergencies, Polk County Public Schools spokesman Jason Gearey said in an e-mailed statement to The Washington Post. We dont want students to be scared, but we need them to be safe.

“Ive gone 180 degrees from my views growing up concerning the police. Theyve gone from 100% pro-cop (good-guys) to a complete distrust and hatred for these lying, thuggish, mafia wannabees.
I know Im not alone.”
As the federal and state governments grow more and more tyrannical each passing year that number continues to grow both fore the politicians and those that enforce their unt-Constitutional edicts.

This episode illustrate why an armed person in the classroom is so important.
The armed gunman who broke into the room should have been immediately shot and killed.
Just one more example of public skools, aka government run indoctrination centers, being a willing part of the police state.
Does this represent a change in tactics? I thought they waited outside the school for it to go quiet before cautiously entering, as with the Columbine incident. Has there been a recent incident where the cops went running in and stopped a mass shooting in progress in a school, or is this just for show?
Not snarking, honest question.
Home School
When a five year old bends his fingers and makes the shape of a ‘gun’ with one hand, he receives no tolerance.
When a government employee aims an *actual* gun at young children during an unannounced drill, he receives a taxpayer-paid vacation.

yes
The ironic thing is that in an actual active shooter situation the cops cower outside.

You have a point. I recall reading recently that was the case in the days of Columbine.
Perhaps someone else can answer your question about how LEO’s respond to active shooter situations (real ones not drills).

Desensitizing is exactly what this is! Not only for the kids, but parents as well.
In the interview from Fox, the parent expressed that the idea behind studying for a test was to prepare for the test. A drill would be preparation for the real event. In this case the students were thrown into the real situation without preparation.
You might want to drop Chief Charlie a short note to express yourself about his (and his department’s) behavior. BTW, he’s white and he’s fat! Typical “doughnut muncher.” From the negative local press and citizen’s responses, my bet is he’s hiding under his desk.
I had plenty of dealings with the Polk County school system administrators in the late 90s. When you deal with them on a one to one basis the level of corruption and incompetence is absolutely jaw dropping.
The lying on so many levels is nearly beyond belief for a logical person to comprehend.
When my daughter graduated in 2000 they were darn glad to see the last of me. But it’s hopeless, the parents are sheep. It was as frustrating talking to them as well.
Basically the police view these children and the school as nothing more than target practice. ...and by the way, you're not alone. Police septs are more and more resembling the thuggish "Peacekeepers" in "Hunger Games".
From a firearms instructor’s perspective, one may hope the students videoed the LEO’s during this ill conceived debacle.
Were participating officers guns allowed to be carried with ammunition in the magazine?
Did any video show a participant’s trigger finger inside the trigger guard?
What were the specific training orders regarding possible return fire during a training exercise?
What if a teacher did have a gun and what if the teacher shot at or hit a participant?
Were orders given not to return fire under any conditions during this poorly managed “training exercise” at a Pooblik Skrewl Collective Hive?
My prediction is that this will prove to be a gift to Winter Haven area lawyers.
Class action or multiple lawsuits against the school administrators, police chief and police thugs that participated in this “drill”. Just following orders is the same defense that Nuremberg defendents used, and it won’t work. Some of these kids will need professional help due to the psychological trauma.
I’m sure that this stunt has engendered respect for police and school authorities.
It was either stupidity, or purposeful desensitization of children to jackbooted thugs.
Either way, an abhorrent incident that requires a full-on response from every parent in that district, including discovery, firings, andlawsuits. Nothing less. Tagline.
Let the lawsuits begin.
