Theres not a lot of evidence for these types of claims. In 2011, The Journal of Bone and Mineral Research published a meta-analysis examining whether milk consumption might protect against hip fracture in middle-aged and older adults. Six studies containing almost 200,000 women could find no association between drinking milk and lower rates of fractures.
More recent research confirms these findings. A study published in JAMA Pediatrics this year followed almost 100,000 men and women for more than two decades. Subjects were asked to report on how much milk they had consumed as teenagers, and then they were followed to see if that was associated with a reduced chance of hip fractures later in life. It wasnt.
A just-released study in The BMJ that followed more than 45,000 men and 61,000 women in Sweden age 39 and older had similar results. Milk consumption as adults was associated with no protection for men, and an increased risk of fractures in women. It was also associated with an increased risk of death in both sexes.

Good to know! I drink 2 to 3 gallons a week. I would probably drink 3 to 4 if I could keep it at work. My addiction.

Without sufficient vitamin D, your bod's chemical messengers put calcium in arteries rather than bones.

People don’t drink groundwater anymore... something like 80% of Americans are deficient in magnesium.
And no magnesium means bad or absent calcium utilization.
I think bananas are suppose to make you fat now.
Some of what the experts say is good or bad for you makes no sense at all. I’ll go with what seems right to me and not worry about it too much. Death will come to us all no matter what.

I only read the intro, have no idea what the entire article said, but I bet the milk consumption mentioned was not connected with fat free skim milk, the only kind of milk I have in my home.
Yes I am guessing it was only being discussed in relation with calcium and bone benefit.
But certainly skim milk is not bad for you, not harmful to arteries for those of us from a family with a history of heart disease
Beer is better for you than milk. That’s my claim and no amount of evidence can dissuade me from believing it.
Several of the comments to the NYT article mention low-fat and fat-free milk. The difference in calories isn’t that much.
