Traffic stop in Newport Beach leads to seizure of 7 assault rifles [Full Auto],
Orange County Register ^ | 11/20/2014 | Scott Schwebke

NEWPORT BEACH – Two people were in the Orange County Jail this week, after police stopped them in a van with automatic rifles and ammunition.

The van contained seven AK-47 assault rifles, six 30-round high-capacity 7.62 caliber magazines, two 10-round magazines and more than 350 rounds of 7.62 caliber ammunition inside, Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said.

Manzella said the arrests are significant because of the weapons seized. All of the guns were modified to fire in fully automatic mode, and one had a barrel less than 16 inches in length in violation of California state law, she said. One of the AK-47 rifles had been reported stolen in Georgia.

I would guess they were in the process of being smuggled into Mexico. They have to traffic guns the old-fashioned way now that Fast and Furious is shut down.

Quid pro quo: The U.S. has the weapons and Mexico has the drugs. Makes sense.

I keep forgetting that drugs are wonderful and that there's nothing wrong with them.

Were the perps legal or illegal?

Betcha there was a mix of both. The legals bought the weapons and the illegals used them.

Both Cardiel and Gurule were arrested for multiple charges, including: Transporting a Machine Gun, Possession of an Assault Weapon, Possession of a Short-Barreled Rifle, Possession of High-Capacity Magazines, Possession of Stolen Property, and Conspiracy.* Additional charges of Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and Possession of Ammunition by a Felon were also requested on both subjects.* Cardiel was additionally charged with Possession of Burglary Tools, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, False Evidence of Registration, and Driving on a Suspended License.* Both are currently being held on $500,000 bail.

..................

Something tells me they won’t be offered much if any plea bargains.

We can only prevent this by closing the “gun show loophole”!

The violence over the drug black market is entirely because they are illegal, just as we had violence over alcohol smuggling during prohibition.

Drugs themselves cause their own havoc, but the violence in Mexico is a function of our prohibition of drugs.

HOW LAWS WORK

If we had a gun law prohibiting automatic weapons these perps wouldn’t have have had these fully automatic rifles.

If we had a law prohibiting illegal aliens from being elected president we wouldn’t have one squatting in the White House right now declaring himself King.

I was just thinking the same thing. If the gov’t ever outlaws cigarettes the same thing would happen. Price would skyrocket & criminals would move in, using violence to protect their territory, etc., etc...

...30-round high-capacity 7.62 caliber magazines,...

As opposed to 30-round low-capacity 7.62 caliber magazines. That's the kind I use.

There is no gunshow loophole in CA. And.... handguns/longguns require background check, all sales thru FFL’s and all guns (save for a very few exceptions)registered. None of these laws seemed to stop this couple.

True.
The sad part is that the government itself IS the drug cartel. El Presidente IS el jefe of the cartel. That's my read.
I lived and worked in Mexico City decades ago and it was the same back then. Nothing has changed.

Somehow I don't equate that BRIEF experiment of Prohibition with the ban on heroin, LSD, meth, pot, etc.

You won’t get an argument from me on that truthful statement.

But us gunners do find work arounds in order to remain armed. ;^)

To expand a bit on the detachable mags...you can own AR’s but the mags require a mechanical type release, not permitted to have a quick finger release.

Of course, LE are exempt because somehow, they’re more “trustworthy”...ha!

There you go. If it wasn’t for intergalactic background checks and ban on magazines (commonly known as clips to the msm) of over 10 rounds these guys might have...... Oh, never mind. Sounds like moonbeam needs more anti gun laws. That ought to fix it.
